The planning and zoning commission approved a comprehensive plan for Pella likely to gain city council approval this week. The 150 page booklet outlines growth guidelines, central business district development, road system improvements, and a parks and recreation system to guide orderly expansion while preserving beauty and small town charm.
State Representative Bill Dieleman joined 84 other legislators at a two day seminar in Clear Lake on the Iowa General Assembly process and the MCSP staffing project. The program, funded by Legis 50 with a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation grant, features two full time staffers aiding health related legislation. Participants included E L Bubba Henry of Louisiana and Virginia Senator Edmunds in panel discussions.
Democrats in the Fourth district will host a workshop and fundraising dinner at Lake Red Rock on Sunday August 21. The 2 to 5 p.m. workshop covers candidate recruitment party organization campaign planning affirmative action and a review of the 1977 legislative session. A 6 p.m. dinner features U S Senator Dick Clark and Congressman Neal Smith with tickets 25 per family 10 per person and 5 for students and seniors. Tickets are available from Democratic county chairs.
Riley Roberts, new manager of the Pella Flight Center west of the city, spoke to local service clubs detailing aviation’s history and economic value. He notes Grinnell ties, ongoing improvements, and plans to enhance public access with better safety gear, ground transport, and radio beacons while outlining available aircraft including a Piper Cherokee 40 and Beechcraft Bonanza.
Editor notes publish letters from Iowa Jewish Home residents and Minnesota visitors praising Pella during Tulip Time. They commend the town’s cleanliness, well-kept storefronts, neat yards, and warm community spirit. Visitors express interest in May events and future visits.
Towa Electric Light and Power Company filed with the Iowa State Commerce Commission for a 4.7 percent increase in natural gas rates for average residential customers. The proposal, effective Sept 1 subject to refund with interest, would raise heating bills about 99 cents monthly and add roughly $2.3 million in intown revenue to cover higher gas service costs.
The Iowa Department of Revenue extended the filing deadline for disabled and senior citizen property tax and rent reimbursement claims from July 31 to October 31. Eligible Iowans 65+ disabled or 55+ surviving spouses with income under 9000 must file for refunds of property tax paid in fiscal year ending June 30 1977 or rent in 1976. Do not file duplicates if already filed. Forms and free assistance centers are available statewide.
