Wall Drug Store Turns Ice Water into Big Business
The Wall Drug Store in Wall grew from a 1936 ice water gimmick into a regional tourist landmark. Ted Husted and son Bill expanded the business to 150 summer workers, a 475 seat cafe, and a million dollars in annual sales. Roadside signs dominate advertising with about 5,000 daily drinks, 200 local signs and 3,000 abroad, including a Shanghai mileage banner. The store, run by pharmacists, still fills prescriptions while offering steer skulls, moccasins, rattlesnake ashtrays, and Jack-a-lopes as souvenirs.
