A Montana forest fire near Missoula, believed man caused, started about 4:30 pm in Pattee Canyon near Ben Hogan Drive five miles from the city. By evening 500 ground firefighters and volunteers fought the blaze as helicopters ordered evacuations and crews worked to save homes. About 2,000 acres burned. six families lost homes.
The Republican booth at the Southern Iowa Fair in Oskaloosa invites fairgoers to enter the Guess the Kernels in a Bottle contest with prizes. Mahaska county co chair Anita Leitsinger notes a helium balloon for kids at 10 cents and free ice water as in past years while participants may take a survey on current issues and collect GOP materials. no entry fee. Winners will be notified after the fair.
Ten years ago Mark Ryken, age 11, won the Soap Box Derby as harvests climbed to 85 bushels per acre. A quarter century back, derby victors were Charles DeBruin, Jerry Gosselink, and Bruce Heerema. Open house drew 500 farmers to see John Deere model 50 and 60. a Standard Service station went up at West First and Washington. Fifty years ago A. B. Van Houweling Auto Co advertised a 4 cylinder Dodge at 875 dollars and a Hudson Six at 1850 dollars. Hagenbeck and Wallace circuses visited Oskaloosa while Tom Mix drew crowds at the Alamo Theatre. Seventy years ago Des Moines Monarch Manufacturing offered to move to Pella with stock, as locals debated expansion into automobiles. an editorial lampooned toy pistols.
The Red Rock Lake Association says the lake remains at permanent pool level 725 despite drought with excellent water quality. Local crew adds new recreation signs, improvements to North Overlook and Whitebreast beaches, safety buoys and docks, and electric hookups for 24 camping pads to be donated and ready by Aug 1. Family Day events for Labor Day weekend evolve with hot air balloon races mule and honey jumps ice cream social jazz band campfire and sailboat races.
