Memorial Day Parade and Local News in 1928 Pella Reports
Twenty years ago on May 24 1928 Pella prepared for Memorial Day with children marching and Rev Bernie Mulder to give the address. The Home for the Aged reported cash assets of just over 3000 dollars, about 500 per resident. A stolen car linked to a local bakery was recovered, chicken thieves struck farmers west on Highway 63, and prowlers tried to steal a car from Mrs Tangerak but fled when lights were turned on. Fred White outlined a 62.2 mile paved road program costing about 1 997 000 dollars with state funding and county taxes. The Legion Post sought a four team twilight baseball league and meetings for boys 14 and up. A Literary Digest piece reviewed Tombstone detailing Wyatt Earp and his family. Local seniors and faculty were mentioned with several graduations and recitals. A drowning accident near New Sharon affected the Van Gorp family. Tulip Time parades showcased mothers and babies in cabs with prize winners named. Mayor Tersptra of Lynnville drew crowds in Dutch dress at Tulip Time. Alva K Brown of Chicago, a former Pella boy, died, noted for gifts to Berea College and Skiff Memorial Hospital. Twenty thousand people attended the Tulip Festival the following Sunday causing traffic. The operetta The Blue Tulip was popular with festival visitors. The Orange City Festival invite was extended by Mayor Vande Steeg’s office.
