Sub-soiling advances on southern Iowa farm
John Coster near New Sharon purchased a 66 horsepower Diesel sub soiler to deepen soil to 30 to 36 inches. The device breaks the soil pan to keep rainfall where crops can reach moisture, improving drainage on level Grundy loam fields. His wife Eleanor Fel ing Coster, daughter of nine-farm lineage near Laurens, assists at a modern ranch style home built in 1964. An eye will be kept on the experiment through the crop season for Chronicle readers.

Wool and lamb incentive payments outlined for first year
The plan sets 40 percent payments for wool and about 70 cents per hundredweight for lambs at slaughter. Incentives are based on cents per pound grease basis. First year deductions of one cent per hundredweight from slaughter, lamb, and yearling payments will finance a campaign to ease the wool and lamb market.
Outlook for Hog Prices Through Spring 1956
Iowa State College economist Francis A. Kutish says hog prices should strengthen into late spring despite a temporary setback from recent price increases. Slaughter has declined seasonally since March 1, with pork products like lard and hams now above late January levels. The March 1 pig survey shows an 8 percent drop in pigs, and spring farrowing plans are smaller, signaling higher prices next fall as total hog numbers shrink and fewer hogs remain in the Corn Belt.

Pressure on packing plants and hog prices in late 1955
Kutish argues that to meet planned spring and summer cuts for hogs, demand and supply shifts may push the 1956 hog price low forward to November. The piece notes November and December as likely pressure points, with Iowa hog prices depressed by packing capacity issues.
