Pruning and Training An Apple Tree

Pruning and training an apple tree should begin when the tree is a one-year whip to maximize results. Initial pruning sets heading height at 24 to 34 inches, then the second year adds a leader and 4 to 10 scaffold branches. Select the central leader, cut back to 24 inches, subordinate other branches to the leader, avoid weak crotches, and keep scaffold branches to about five well distributed at proper angles with about 16 inch pruning of those branches. The aim is a modified central leader with strong, evenly spaced branches.

Modified lead described as best for average trees

The text discusses tree training styles with open center and central leader approaches. It notes open center risks in wind while loaded with fruit and cites sunlight as vital for color and ripening. The modified lead is praised as best for average trees, with comments from M. M. Dockindorf.
