On Labor Day the Lamesa Chamber of Commerce released 40 or 50 balloons with finder tags. Mrs Curtis Elroy of Toyah reported finding one balloon about five miles west of Toyah, roughly 200 miles from the start, prompting who found it to contact the chamber.

The Pecos Rotary club hosted an all musical program Thursday at noon in the Orient Hotel directed by Ralph Williams. Solo and piano numbers by Ralph Williams Jr. and Alton Hughes, Julia Williams, Warren Collings and J C Wilson accompanied by Mr. Hughes drew steady applause.
Co R Williams about 40 years old indicted six months ago for insurance frauds and forgeries was captured at Fort Hancock Sunday night. Sheriff Louis Roberson returned him to Pecos where he is jailed in Reeves county.
Buddy Reisenberg recalled that next Tuesday October 3 will mark the fifth anniversary of the Westex Hotel in Pecos and the end of the fifth year of his lease. He said he renewed the lease and will remain indefinitely. The Westex has been a popular hotel during its five years.
Gerald Thompson, Pecos High assistant coach and Pecos grammar school teacher, was chosen by the Pecos Lions club as Scout master for the local Boy Scout Troop. He succeeds Dr J Su Kincannon who resigned due to time constraints. Dick Staurley remains assistant scoumaster. Dr Kincannon stays on Scout Committee. The scouts, with Thompson Kincannon and Starley, took an overnight hike to Balmorhea last weekend.
Four new applications to retail beer were filed at the Pecos courthouse this week. The applicants include Al Gray for the Elite Cafe George D. Duncan of 122 Oak Street Jerry Cummings for the Club Cafe and S P Capps for the American Cafe.
Week four delay as Red Bluff project waits for final action by Secretary Ickes public works board. Finance report revision spared rejection but postponed decision, with telegrams from engineer Vernon L. Sullivan and Senator Sheppard's staff cited. Awaiting next Tuesday meeting for outcome.
R V Nabors district supervisor for the state comptroller department says many gasoline tax evaders have been run down in the Long county oil field and that he has evidence for presentation before the grand jury He adds that Texans would be surprised by the extent of evasion.
Davis elected permanent chairman of the local Compliance Board of the NRA at the first meeting. Members include Jimmy Caroline J P Donnell J B Keser Albert Sisk Mrs Tom McClure and Richard L Toll. The board heard a complaint from local carpenters about wage concessions and settled it without mediation.
The Pecos division of the Western District of Texas convened with over a hundred court staff, attorneys, jurors and witnesses. Judge Robert P. McMillen presides in place of ill Judge Boynton as trials convict three defendants for embezzlement and counterfeiting, with sentences to Chillicothe Ohio prison. Civil business is reported and social events accompany the term.
Mr. and Mrs. D. J. Evans and Miss Mildred White from the Sinclair camp traveled to Pecos for a theatre outing on Saturday night.
Seperiano, a 19 year old on the Mexican team, hit a fast ball to the outfield, ran the bases, and collapsed near home plate. Physicians said heart failure caused his death, with funeral services held this week in the Mexican section of town.
Higginbotham-Bartlett Lumber Co of Pecos awarded the contract for materials for the new division highway office building. Labor for the structure will be supplied by the highway department, while the shop building materials contract has not yet been let.
Sheriff report shows Pecos ISD owes a total of 45 841.85 in delinquent and unpaid taxes. For year ending Aug 31 1933 collections were 19 363.44 with 3 872.69 to interest and sinking fund and 15 490.75 to local maintenance. Delinquent amount for fiscal year 1933 is 10 841.85 and from organization to Aug 31 1982 total unpaid and delinquent taxes reach 45 841.85.
Pecos High School Eagles meet Fabens at Rotary Field in the season opener moved up a day. Illness sidelined both first string ends and line changes follow. Probable Pecos lineup features Camp Cowan at quarterback Bowie Davis fullback and M A Dardin Billy Oliver at halfback with Cordy Wilkins at end and Frank Anthony Frank Mitchell on the line.
J. P. Hickey a Crane oil worker was sentenced to five years in the penitentiary by a 109th district court jury after about twenty hours of deliberation. Defense motion for a new trial was denied and notice of appeal was filed.
Pecos post office receipts show a slight acceleration in business for this quarter of 1933 compared with the third quarter of 1932. Postmaster Morris W. Collie says there is about a 4 percent increase, with third quarter receipts roughly on par with the second quarter.
