Hiram Sibley 35, a cowboy and WWII veteran, was found dead near Walker Wells on the Casey ranch 45 miles north of Toyah. An army rifle discharged, the dog kept vigil as friends suggest an accidental shooting. Funeral services were held in El Paso with burial in Evergreen cemetery. Pecos Furniture prepared the body.
Public works board set to act on Red Bluff loan application next Tuesday per engineer Vernon L. Sullivan. Sullivan, in Washington, urged Attorney J. E. Starley for prayers and said he would relay any progress by Tuesday afternoon or Wednesday. Delays stem from board scheduling and a finance department objection that has since been resolved.
In Pecos the long honored resident known as Own Medicine Mr JM passed after a period of illness. He had been treated at his own sanitary and upon advice by Dr Hilliard, the acting surgeon, he returned to bed and reportedly was improving before final decline.
Beer vendors arrive in Pecos as the first week of legal 3 2 beer ends. The Pecos Coffee Shop offers home delivery of mixed six packs at the same price as solid cases. Brands listed include Budweiser Pabst Blue Ribbon Miller Schiltz Gold Label Berghoff and Matt Heidelberg.
Simon Dulatre a Filipino was killed Friday morning when the car he and Clarence Woods of Los Angeles were in overturned after a front tire blew out near Kent. Woods escaped with minor bruises and cuts. A Pecos Furniture Co ambulance took the body to Pecos. funeral arrangements are incomplete.
The Camp Sanitarium announces installation of an oxygen tent to aid pneumonia cases. The device fits over a patient’s bed and can raise oxygen levels to ease breathing, reducing effort. Previously the nearest tents were El Paso or Abilene. local uses show several compelling cases.
At a Tuesday noon election during the Pecos Chamber of Commerce membership meeting at Brandon Coffee Shop eleven directors were chosen: W. K. Bell H. W. Hinkle Floyd Brownlee D D W schemman Keith Camp Albert Sisk Ray Lewis J H E Starley W J Sherrod H G Russell and Clarence Bell. Ray Lewis retired from the board with H J Davis presiding as secretary. The group also approved allowing attendees of the September 29 annual meeting to elect the chamber president and vice president. The September session will be at the high school auditorium with a Christian church group serving a baked chicken meal at 50 cents a ticket. Special out of town speakers were to address the gathering, attendance was reported good.
United States Department of Labor office opened in Pecos this week to handle worker applications on projects using federal funds. A committee chaired by Hill Hudson with Kk. B. Kiser and Wynn Hamilton will supervise. Ben Randall named county labor administrator. The office, housed in the Bozeman building with Rehabilitation and Relief, will source workers from registered lists.
Pecos Volunteer Fire Department and city officials joined invited guests for an old time Dutch Lunch. Chris Anton of Pecos Coffee Shop funded the event featuring a 16 gallon keg of Budweiser served to attendees.
The Bill Dean Memorial Trophy is created in memory of William Walters Dean Jr. by his family and will be awarded yearly to Pecos High School’s outstanding junior boy. Nominations come from students, athletes with letters, and faculty, each naming three rising seniors. A committee selects the recipient, who keeps the trophy until the next year’s holder is chosen.
After more than 16 hours of deliberation the jury in State v J P Hickey failed to reach a verdict. The trial began in Reeves County 109th district court after a venue change from Crane County. Prosecution was led by Dick Toll with Bill Kerr as prosecutor and Bill Hudson defending Hickey. Large crowds from Crane County attended, and two night sessions were held to speed the proceedings.
The Gifford Hill Construction Co finished laying asphalt from Pecos to Orla opening the new Carlsbad highway. The 13 mile gap to Pecos remains before Carlsbad Cavern, with Texas and New Mexico both completing their portions to date.
Ward Weakley, a hotel man with over seven years of experience, has leased the Plaza Hotel from owner B T Biggs. He will operate the hotel under his personal supervision after remodeling and redecorating the 40 room hostelry. Weakley formerly served at Hotel Brandon as night greeter and worked six years at the Holland Hotel in Alpine. Friends predict success in running the Plaza.
Relief and work applicants must register anew at the Rehabilitation and Relief Commission office in the Bozeman building. Ray Lewis and Beau McCutcheon Jr. celebrate forming a partnership by offering free coffee and cake at their Lewis McCutcheon Grocery Co. store this Saturday.
Construction began this week on a new $10,000 highway offices and shops on recently purchased west town lots at the Bankhead and Balmorhea junction. The bungalow type office will be 48 by 38 feet with private and general offices, a visitor waiting room, and rear highway patrol offices. A large frame shop building will lie behind the office block, with work to finish in sixty days. The department handles the contract and builds by day labor to group all division staff under one roof.
The Pecos NRA Compliance Board, appointed by National Recovery Chairman, includes R I Toll J P Donnell Jr B Kiser Mrs J A Crane Albert Sisk and Jimmy Caroline. They will educate conciliate and mediate NRA complaints and exceptions while highway work aims to finish the Carlsbad district link and surface the Pecos Saragosa road soon.
Pecos High Eagles idle this weekend as coaches push players. first game is next Saturday Sept 50 with Fabens High. Pecos Superintendent Guy Walker says Pecos will host Midland on November 3, the first Pecos Midland meeting since 1930.
Pecos Rotary club members voted to attend a Baptist revival next Thursday night with Lions clubs as special guests. They also approved a Mexican themed ladies night on October 12 at Ralph Williams home with Christian church ladies serving dinner. Secretary Manahan identified 65 Rotary International country flags during Thursday's program.
County officials issued a strong warning that the new beer law must be strictly followed to prevent sales to minors. Dickinson Toll said he is investigating complaints and will prosecute offenders, urging sellers to be extremely careful with enforcement.
The Pecos division will begin its semi annual term Monday as the federal grand jury is impanelled before Judge Robert P. McMillen. Judge Charles A. Boynton is ill and cannot make the Pecos trip. A crowded docket is anticipated with visitors from nearby counties.
A Balmorhea delegation appeared before the highway commission to oppose moving the division shops and offices from Balmorhea to Pecos. The group included C. R. Cross John Oates L. M. Pittman W. L. Kingston Bennett McCutcheon Charles Splittgarber C L Tupper K K Stuckler and El Paso attorney John B. Howard.
