A Pecos writer notes beer spread calm after forecasts of doom. Balmorhea rains saved farmers by boosting irrigation and reservoir levels. Washington debates cotton quotas and Red Bluff land use, while local Texas politics temper reservoir criticism and delays.
The Pecos Volunteer Fire Department asks the city council to appoint a five member Site Committee to bid on all options for a new city hall and fire hall site. The letter argues bids should be open and the best site chosen for the whole city to avoid accusations of favoritism.
The Red Bluff Water Power Control district board met to extend boundaries to cover about 150000 acres across seven independent irrigation districts. The move aims to secure government loan assets and streamline administration. A Pecos leadership slate was named to secure lands and rights of way for the Red Bluff reservoir, with directors Barron Miller and others coordinating transcripts for district organization.
In Pecos and Reeves county legal 3.2 beer arrived at midnight on September 15 following a local option result. Ten outlets and several wholesalers offered many brands while city and county officials impose licenses and fees ranging from 25 to 250 dollars with fines 25 to 100 dollars per offense. Dances celebrated the change but officials saw limited long term impact.
Heavy rainfall swept much of the trans Pecos country this week. Balmorhea reservoir reached full capacity while mountains and canyons saw high water and travel delays near Fort Davis. North, northwest and southeast areas reported showers aiding local farms and cattlemen amidst generally beneficial conditions.
The Feeons Parent-Teacher Association will hold its first meeting of the year on Monday September 18 at 3 30 in the high school auditorium. Parents are urged to attend, meet the new teachers, and renew acquaintance with returning staff. Bring a guest.
The Chamber of Commerce will elect 11 directors from a slate of 25 candidates at the membership meeting next Tuesday. The event begins at 12 15 at Hotel Brandon Coffee Shop, with President Ray Lewis urging all members to attend.
The first 1933 cotton bale brought to Pecos for ginning came from the T. L. Patrick farm in Ward County. It was grown by Manuel Lebara, as reported by M. W. Collie, manager of the Electric Gin.
Mrs. Jack Shipman launches a Pecos area magazine celebrating Big Bend history with photos and border lore. The Sept 1933 issue, 1000 copies, sells quickly. Oct will cover cattle history, Nov Pecos region. Rotary talk by Dr. Jit Camp outlines Pecos schools’ growth and bonds through 1928.
One of New Mexico’s historic units, old Company B of the 1st Infantry, plans a reunion in Carlsbad next week. W. W. Dean of Pecos and Lawson Goodrich of Mentone, veterans of the unit renamed Company B of the 143rd Machine Gun Battalion in World War I, will attend.
Sheriff Louis Roberson and City Marshal Red O'Neil raided a local tourist camp poker game last weekend. Five gamblers were taken to court and each assessed fines of $1 plus costs totaling $15.00 per person.
Members of the Pecos Lions and Pecos Rotary clubs viewed a three reel travelogue on Mexico at the Grand theater. Manager H H Johnson hosted the Friday morning showing furnished by Rotary International from Chicago. Several club members had returned to Pecos after spending the summer in Clovis New Mexico.
Frank M. Stubbeman secured the SSth district seat after the Aug 26 election with 2786 votes to Howell’s 2362. Stubbeman carried Midland County 755 32 while Howell carried Pecos County 502 197, finalizing district results in Austin.
Miss Lillie Poe relocates her millinery business from the Wadley building to the space beside the Security State Bank, formerly occupied by Sam Winkier's establishment.
Mrs. Lula Fay Shepherd 27 of Clint died this week in an El Paso hospital from purpura hemorrhagica or hemorrhage of the skin tissues a rare malady. She was daughter of Mr and Mrs J F Kirkpatrick formerly of Pecos now of Clint and sister of Mrs Mary Kirkpatrick Addis and De Witt Kirkpatrick. Pecos attendees at the funeral included Mr and Mrs P K Bowie Dan Bowie Sybil Bowie and Olun Davis.
Reeves County grand jury adjourned last Thursday after returning three indictments. It will resume deliberations on September 22 with foreman H N McKellar and a panel including H T Collier and R G Matejowsky. Divorces were frequently granted during the first two weeks of this term.
Miss Val Krauskopf a teacher in the El Paso schools returns to El Paso after a several day visit with her parents Mr and Mrs Max Krauskopf.
H. DP. Davis secretary of the Chamber of Commerce and general chairman of the NRA drive in Pecos attended a district NRA workers conference in El Paso where plans for advancing the president's re employment program were discussed. Davis returned to Pecos Thursday.
Ray Lewis and Bean McCutcheon Jr announce a new partnership to buy Lewis Grocery Market from Luther Wilcox and operate both businesses as Lewis McCutcheon Grocery and Market. The market changes take effect next Monday. Wilcox family moves to Carlsbad. McCutcheon leads the market with assets owned by the partnership.
A Pecos Mercantile Company window features suede and leather jackets on display. On the wall two calf hides are shown raw before cutting, illustrating tanning and dyeing steps used for the jackets.
Rev. Gus Ramage pastor of Pecos Christian church was elected to the state Christian board of missions by District Three at Flaso. J. T. McWissick of Alpine was elected president of the 1954 convention. Ramage and Miss Golda Wilhite were appointed to arrange a youth conference for the district.
Aliss Sybil Bowie, longtime Clint public schools teacher, is appointed superintendent of Pecos schools this year. Her promotion earns wide congratulations from friends and family. Miss Bowie is the daughter of Mr and Mrs P E Bowie.
Senator Regan returns to Texas delaying final action on the Red Bluff loan as complications delay the Washington board led by Interior Secretary Ickes. Engineer Vernon Sullivan remains in Washington handling the application while Regan attends the Texas special session in Austin.
Byron D. Wilcox, 79, a former Pecos resident, died September 2 at his home in Charlotte Michigan. He farmed in this area during his residence. He is survived by eight grandchildren four daughters four sons a brother and one great grandchild.
James C. Trott Sr. longtime Barstow resident died last Friday after a lingering illness. Funeral services were held Saturday at the Barstow residence with Rev. D. F Adams and Rev. F. E. H. Ratliff officiating. Surviving are six children including G. P. Trott and C. T. Trott of Barstow and Mrs. Kenneth Slack of Pecos. The Barstow community mourns his loss. Pecos friends extend sympathy. Kolar funeral home in charge.
The Pecos delegation planned to petition the state highway commission in Austin for emergency road work to relieve unemployment, but the visit is postponed to early next week due to the commission delaying its meeting. The Pecos group includes County Judge and Mrs. J. B. Woolfolk Dr. Jim Camp S. M. Prewit and Judge Ben Rand als.
Mrs M F Moore of Albuquerque New Mexico arrived Saturday for an extended visit with her daughter and family Mr and Mrs Tolbert Garrett.
