Mexican girls Lupe Arneles and Dianecia Reyes are jailed on 300 dollar bond after an examining trial found probable cause in the torture murder of Maria Alverado de Garcia 51. The body showed severe beatings with a leather strap believed to have driven out supposed evil spirits. Garcia had pellagra with improving health prior to death. The husband Luis Garcia reported his wife was taken by the two women who refused him access. The case was bound over to the grand jury set to reconvene for the September term of the 109th district court.
Pecos high Eagles host Roscoe to open the 1939 schedule on Rotary Field at 8 30 p m. A capacity crowd was expected with brisk reserved seat sales in downtown drug stores and most boxes sold prior to game time.
Nell B Westerman of Balmorhea cooperates with the Soil Conservation Service to implement an alfalfa and row crop rotation on her farm. An elevation map outlines border lines as part of a Water Facilities Project led by Zech Cameron. Alfalfa adds nitrogen to the soil and is expected to boost yields.
The Pecos Chamber of Commerce unanimously approved a resolution urging repeal or modification of the Neutrality Act. HEPECOS School board in a special session set September 25 as bid closing for a field house at Rotary Field. Specs require stucco walls, tile roof, two dressing rooms, rest rooms, and drinking fountains. Bidders may obtain plans from Supt. R Henry Blackwell with a $10 deposit. City will provide water and sewer connections.

Confirmation reached Pecos that a 12 000 allotment funds betterment work on Highway 285. Initial notices said 27 miles from Fort Stockton to Terrell county line but highway officials corrected the route to Fort Stockton to Reeves county line. Dudley Yard Pecos Chamber of Commerce and Harry Hines State Highway Commission were involved in the verification.
San Antonio salesman Bob Hartenberger bound over to Reeves county grand jury on drunken driving charges after his car allegedly struck Fire Chief Charles Manahan at the American Care fire scene Wednesday night. Manahan received a hip bruise and bonds set at 1500 dollars after an examining trial.
A daughter Ada Sue was born on September 2 at Pecos Sanitarium to Mr Roy Ware and Mrs Ware. Both mother and baby are reported to be doing nicely.
Coaches Clayton Hopkins and Girvice Archer debut in District T7-A with a healthy squad and Cole Armstrong slated to start at quarterback despite an ankle injury. Starters include Griffin, Burchard, Richards, Beauford, Otto, Burton, Haynes, Precht, Medanich, Woollard. Officials listed Bear Curfman, O P Adams, and Tommy Thompson. Game time 8 30 with a Pecos band parade downtown this afternoon.
The first bale of the 1939 Pecos cotton crop earned Willis Deerman of Barstow a 75 dollar premium in cash and merchandise. The amount was funded by a popular subscription among local business leaders and a committee including Bill Turpin H G Meyer and Keith Camp. Contributions came from Penneys United Hotel Brandon and numerous Pecos merchants and banks.
County Judge J. B. Woolfolk left Thursday for Mineral Wells to attend the convention of West Texas County Judges. He was accompanied by his wife.
