Melon shipments of Pecos cantaloupes reach 43 carloads this week. Express shipments average about 200 crates daily, with heavy movement by express and truck. Officials expect movement to slacken in two weeks though season may extend into February if weather stays favorable. M L Todd has many melons left to pick.
Curtis McElroy deputy game warden of Pecos won the fifth annual Midland rodeo title. He led calf roping with the three day average and earned prize money across days four and five. Total winnings exceed 268 dollars and 55 cents as calculations continue.
Sheriff Louis Roberson and Miss Warren Collings clarified the Lillie W. Cole Memorial Fund accepts contributions from people beyond former students. They reported inquiries from friends of Mrs. Cole and her family about non ex pupils donating.
Captain E M Wells releases a revised driver license schedule for Pecos District 7 after budget cuts reduced staff by five highway patrolmen and two license agents and closed two substations. The Pecos examiner will visit Kermit and Monahans on Tuesday, Fort Stockton Wednesday, Van Horn Sierra Blanca Thursday, with Pecos open Friday. first and third Saturdays include Mantonto. The Marfa examiner splits time among Fort Davis Alpine Marfa and Sanderson with specified times.
Rotary and Lions club members and wives attended a Tuesday night fish fry at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Mer Wilcox hosted by the Lions Club. Entertainment included musical readings by Alyce Clyde Brophy violin solos by Beverly Vaughn and a piano duet by Vaughn and Eston Morton.
Mr and Mrs Sewell Johnson of San Angelo welcome a daughter born Monday afternoon in a San Angelo hospital. The baby’s father is son of Edna Johnson and grandson of Mrs W L Ross of Pecos, who formerly lived here.
U S Geological Survey engineers based in Pecos conduct preliminary work on the half million dollar Pecos River joint investigations. Five engineers are on site with more expected by month’s end and 5 to 12 total over the project, which will last about one and a half to two years. Representatives from several federal agencies may join at stages, with water quality and surface and ground water teams led by Hastings Ellsworth and Sayre.
The Pecos Chamber of Commerce will hold its regular monthly meeting at the Brandon Hotel Coffee Shop next Tuesday at 12 15 PM. Capt M L Swinehart secretary urged all members to attend.
About half of Reeves county cotton farmers receive 11 000 in subsidy payments this week. County Agent Ted Johnston says first batch was filed and paid within less than 30 days, the fastest locally. Remainder of checks expected soon, with 1.6 cents per pound subsidy plus a future 1.8 cents AAA compliance payment planned for fall or winter.
Officers and directors of the Pecos Valley Livestock Protective Association met to seek extension of the 40 year limit on West Texas land purchases from the state. The group will explore legal status and possible legislation to protect ranchers interests as the expiration nears. Attendees included C. O. Finley and S. M. Kyle from Pecos and other regional officials and agents.
Sixty six Dallas Times-Herald newsboys and Circulation Manager Iran T. Whitt toured Pecos this week on a vacation trip. They traveled by chartered bus and were en route to Carlsbad Caverns and McDonald Observatory. The Pecos Chamber of Commerce arranged their stay.
W. Burkholder of Barstow files suit in Reeves County seeking a temporary injunction to stop Red Bluff Water Power Control District from withholding Pecos River flow. The action, aided by Ward County Irrigation District No. 1, charges denial of water and unequal distribution harming Reeves Ward counties farmers with a January 1940 district court hearing.
George Barnes extension livestock specialist from College Station will be in Pecos September 20 for an official visit. Farmers ranchers and other interested parties are invited to meet at Reeves County Courthouse at 9 o clock to discuss livestock production.
District 7-A football committee met in Monahans to review 1939 40 eligibility lists for Monahans Crane Kermit and McCamey. Players were questioned and sustaining data requested. The panel allowed junior teams with players not over 15 on Sept 1 1939 except for graduating class.
District Clerk Hollis Smith released the juror list for the 109th judicial district in Pecos. For the first two-week term starting September 11 and the third week beginning September 25, dozens of names including W. R. Britt Fancher Bell Jack May Heard Reynolds C. M. Adams George Milner Frank Joplin John Conger Pete Saras William Boles are drawn for jury service.
The Pecos school board will meet next week to consider bids for a 30 by 60 foot tile and stucco field house at Rotary Field. One end will serve as locker and equipment storage for Pecos football, the other as visiting team dressing. It will house girls athletic facilities and provide public restrooms. The board will also discuss water and sewer connections with the city council.
Farmers in Reeves Ward and Pecos counties push toward a better-than-ordinary crop with 458 bales ginned so far this season. Harold J Henderson reports gains of 25 to 30 percent over 1938 totals amid lighter insect damage and rising hopes for the Pecos county gins. Prices remain volatile with predictions uncertain as growers anticipate gains across the tri county area.
Hubert Honaker of Saragosa is named to the Farm Security Administration advisory committee to select ten applicants for farm purchase loans. He replaces Roy Rowe as term expires. Other members are J. E. Couch Pecos and A. W. Wigley Balmorhea. Eleven Reeves county tenants applied. about four may be funded.
The grand jury returned four indictments this week in the 109th district court. Two accuse swindling with fraudulent checks. William E. Ryder is charged with theft and Clyde Trayor with burglary. J. W. Bray of Pecos was no-billed after facing an assault with intent to murder charge from a prior shooting incident.
