Reports of heavy rain near the New Mexico state line on Wednesday and Thursday night described the Pecos river flowing a mile wide near Screw Bean draw. Deputies were alerted as the swollen river affected the region and counties prepared for rising waters.
A British Airways Trident 3 and a Yugoslav DC9 collided at 35 000 feet near Zagreb killing 181. Most victims were West German tourists returning from the Adriatic. Flight routes were London Istanbul and Split Cologne. No survivors among the crews or passengers reported.
An Indian Airlines Boeing 737 hijacked on a domestic flight over India forced to land at Lahore Pakistan. A West German woman husband and child among 77 passengers were released. Officials said there were at least two hijackers and no official word on their identities. The plane remained on the ground eight hours after landing.
Toyah parents pressed the school board to reroute buses away from Crockett Junior High toward Zavala to balance race and allow Toyah children to transfer closer. The plan faces state approval and possible next year revision, with supporters noting education growth at Zavala and Toyah concerns over schooling quality. The meeting also covered faculty, facilities, district finances, and a policy banning sex discrimination in programs and employment.
A columnist argues for raising the speed limit for economy cars to 70 mph to save gas and reduce congestion. He proposes a miles per gallon tax and cites enforcement shifts from radar to visible stakes, stopwatches, and binoculars. He envisions Junked car dummy schemes to catch drivers and questions state tax focus over efficiency.
Four crashes occured in a foggy rainy stretch near the I-10 I-20 interchange west of Pecos. Velma Vancise, 55, of Torrance California died after a truck rollover. Five others were hospitalized including Arthur Lopez Louis Lopez and Carlotta Sanchez of El Monte California. Road surface blamed but no highway defect found.
Don Walsh has been named manager of Anthony's in Pecos succeeding Paul Randolph and has moved his family into the Randolph residence at 1805 Hackberry. A Whitesboro native, Walsh previously managed Anthony's stores in Monahans Ennis and Roswell after starting as a salesman in Denton while attending North Texas State University. He and his wife Barbara and sons Donnie and Bobby are Baptists. Evening Optimists host a benefit dance for Kevin Leyva from 8:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. Saturday with MARC playing. advance tickets are $3 and $3.50 at the door.
