On Saturday evening October 7 a group met at the courthouse to form a Game Protective Association to aid the game warden Ray Williams in enforcing state game laws. Dr J L Kincannon was elected president with Louis Roberson vice president Rev Carlton R Wade secretary and Rev Gus Ramage treasurer. Directors named were R R Wall I J Woods John Owens Harvey Beauchamp and Dewey Richbere. The group plans a campaign against predatory birds and animals with prizes for the top scorer, aimed at youths under seventeen.
John Cowan announced he traded his Pecos home and water business to A. L. Piper of DeLeon for a 110 acre farm and orchard near DeLeon. Piper takes over the water business. Cowan will move with family to DeLeon after the term ends. Bussey Camp football fans rejoice Cowan stays in Pecos till term ends. John W. Byrd returned from a Presbyterian church meeting at Ket Ville.
J W Goode a 56 year old Sara gosa farmer was found guilty of the murder of Fane Downs 39 last March by a jury in 109th district court in Barstow. The verdict imposed 10 years in the penitentiary with no death penalty sought by the state. Downs died in a Pecos hospital about ten days after the shooting near the Baker garage in Savagos following a four year irrigation waters dispute that preceded a fistfight. Goode testified he acted in self defense saying he thought Powis was armed and his life was in danger. The trial drew a large crowd from Pecos Saragosa and Balmorhea. defense lawyers Hill Hudson and Roy Biggs prosecuted by Henry Russell with local support.
The city council voted at a called meeting to purchase two 25 foot Cypress Street lots from Pecos Mercantile Co between Second and Third for a new city hall site. The $1250 price was called a rock bottom deal amid plans to replace the current building with a $155,000 federal structure.
The Central Advisory board of the Public Works Administration unanimously approved a $2,606,000 loan for the Red Bluff irrigation and power project north of Pecos on the Pecos River. The lengthy effort spanning 25 years culminated at Tuesday’s meeting with favorable conditions attached.
Secretary H S Ickes and Public Works officials ratified the Red Bluff plan ensuring a 30 percent grant and four percent revenue bonds. Washington telegrams from Congressman Thomason and Senators Connally and Sheppard confirmed approval as Pecos Valley civic leaders celebrate a long dream finally realized after decades of effort and drought-driven drive for irrigation.

Mr and Mrs G R Lay and daughter Marjorie depart Pecos on November 1 to take residence in Graham Texas. Both parents are noted for civic and club activity in Pecos and their absence will be felt. Miss Lily Lay remains in Pecos to teach at the Pecos grammar school.
Dr C J Magee sails to Chicago to attend the Century of Progress exposition and expects to return to Pecos in about two weeks.
Peeps note soft water south of town yields excellent ice when treated with lime varying levels. At the Texas- Louisiana Power Co. last week six 3000 pound blocks were produced, showing the new water compares favorably with the mountain spring water currently used.
Pecos Valley Lodge No. 756 held an unusual stated meeting to mark J B Briscoe’s sixty third Masonry anniversary born January 14 1846 in Fannin County near Greenville. He spoke on what Masonry means to him and received flowers from the lodge.
The C. E. Armstrong and Sons contracting firm of Pecos shared in the work let at the last meeting of the State highway commission. The firm was given contract to lay a caliche base and asphalt surface of about seven miles of new road on the Border highway between Alpine and Marathon. Contract price was around $45,000.
The Texas House passed a bill granting a $500000 refund to farmers in West Texas for fumigation and sterilization costs against the pink bollworm. Reeves county farmers will receive at least $20000, Ward county farmers a similar amount. Governor Ferguson will sign. The measure had prior Senate approval.
Dr J N Kincannon newly elected president announced this week a meeting to perfect the organization to be held Tuesday evening October 24 at 8 oclock at the courthouse. Every member is urged to bring a prospective member.
City Marshal L. H. Red O'Neil returned Sunday night from a visit with relatives in Ohio. He accompanied Deputy Marshal John Camp and a trio of federal prisoners as far as Chillicothe, Ohio, then continued to see his family during the trip.
Employers who signed the President's Voluntary Employment Agreement may report directly to President Roosevelt on NRA compliance. Blank forms were received here Friday and will be distributed through Friday's mail via post office boxes.
Senate Bill No. 91 quickly cleared the House and gained Governor Ferguson's signature, adapting the Red Bluff dis t rict law to Public Works Administration requirements. The measure passed without dissent, credited to Senator B. M. Regen and the bill’s merits, enabling early work and funding.
The Pecos Parent Teacher Association will hold a special meeting Monday evening October 16 at 8 o clock in the high school auditorium. The event marks the birthday of the Texas Congress of Parents and Teachers. A special program will be provided. The public is invited.
Mr and Mrs H E Messinger of New York City and Mrs Sparks arrive in Pecos with Mrs Sparks son Ralph and his wife after a trip to Chicago World’s Fair. They plan to stay about two weeks and are stopping at Hotel Brandon.
Pecos plans a 2 45 p m kickoff at Rotary Field against Marfa Shorthorns as Camp Bussey Cowan remains ill. Backfield duties will be shared by Marvin Cowan Tolliver Dardin and Davis while Inds Collins Ligon Mitchell Anthony Morgan Payne and Stephens line up on offense and defense. Marfa has historically troubled Pecos with a 47 0 loss in 1930 and a 6 6 tie last season.
Former Pecos and Barstow Pyote stars will face off Sunday at Barstow on the Barstow school grid. Kickoff is 3 30 p m with 25 cents admission. Pecos players include Prewit Bowie ONeil Hooligan Ezell and others. A possible return game may be held later in Pecos.
A. H. Sams Jr. court stenographer for the South district court is seriously ill. He is cared for in the W. W. Dean Jr. home as his family arrives from Benjamin, Texas on Thursday night to assist.
Milt Good a former cowboy now serving a long prison term for complicity in a cattle inspector’s murder at Seminole performed in a rodeo at the Huntsville penitentiary last Sunday. Good often rodeos at events across the region.
Mr and Mrs John J Ivy arrived last weekend to make Pecos their home again. Mrs Ivy, formerly Miss Lela McCullough, has taken charge of the ready to wear department at Sisk Dry Goods.
The Intermediate Sunday school of the First Baptist church were entertained by officers and teachers of the church last Tuesday night at the home of Miss Callie Ross. Numerous games and stunts were enjoyed on the spacious lawn. Refreshments and doughnuts were served to about 56 persons.
Ray Lewis traveled to Abilene on Sunday to visit relatives and conduct business activities.
W. W. Sample owner of independent stations at Pyote Wink Hopbs and other places plans a new Red Bluff filling station at Third and Cypress Pecos with day and night service. Opening expected about November 1. Location touted as one of the city's best.
I N Barron of Imperial and Frank L Sharp of Buena Vista were in town Tuesday to discuss business related to the Red Bluff dam project.
Word arrived Friday morning that the new navy air ship The Macon companion to the Akron would pass Pecos en route to the west coast. Home folks kept a sharp lookout. The Akron had passed Pecos before its ill fated plunge into the ocean.
