A Beechcraft Bonanza with seven aboard made an emergency landing in a field near U S 84 at Sudan. There were no injuries and only light damage. Pilot Billy Patrick Walsh of Amarillo reported fuel exhaustion after leaving Amarillo at 10 30 p m Monday en route to Albuquerque.
Gov Preston Smith urges the five man Legislative Redistricting Board to devote full time to redrawing House and Senate districts with an Oct 23 deadline. He criticizes Lt Gov Ben Barnes for missing a key meeting to attend a San Antonio speech and meeting with officials.
Sun Oil Co board chair urged minimal restrictions on energy markets as national energy needs grow. Robert G. Dunlap of Philadelphia called for halting public decision making on energy matters while Secretary Connally spoke to Texas oilmen. Montague of Houston noted optimism but stressed bridging gaps among consumers, government and business. The talk included calls to loosen natural gas price controls.
Five clubs from three counties participated in the Pecos Fall Fair livestock shows. Balmorhea FFA Marfa FFA Pecos FFA Reeves County FFA and Ward County FFA entered animals judged by Jim Gray Texas A&M and Sammye Helmers Hudspeth County agent. Placings span Finewool lambs sheep capons steers horses with champions named among Balmorhea Marfa Reeves County 4 H and Pecos participants.
Two boxes of ladies cosmetics were broken and a wrist watch taken from the home of Carroll J. Ryan at 219 West Seventh Street when entry was made through a rear door while he and his wife slept. The loss was valued at about 300 dollars. The Merry Wives Club will meet Wednesday at 3 30 p m at Mrs W L Fuller’s Barstow home with a program by Mrs John Burkholder.
President Nixon announced he will attend a Moscow summit in late May after his China trip. He said the aim is better US Soviet relations and denied the visits were coordinated to influence each other. The White House and Moscow both confirmed the plan and a high level agenda for progress was agreed.
John T. Rediger of the Chamber of Commerce announces a presentation of Guadalupe National Park long range master plan proposals at the Pecos Community Center Banquet Room on October 19 at 7 30 p.m. John Chapman, park operator, will present. The public, chamber members and officers are urged to attend to hear plans that could boost Pecos tourist business.
Ricky Corder, 10, of Pecos won first place in the zone competition of the annual Punt Pass and Kick contest in Roswell New Mexico on Saturday. Jim Bob McNeil finished third in his division. Corder totaled 221 yards to top 10 year olds while the runner up had 198 yards. Corder advances to district playoffs in Phoenix Arizona next Saturday with winners moving to the San Diego area contest. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Paul G Corder Tra park 37.
The final Evelyn Wood speed reading demonstration comes tonight at 7 30 in the Banquet Room of the Community Center. It is free and arranged for Pecos residents by the Education Division of the Chamber of Commerce with the Midland branch directing.
State Representative Tom Niland accepts chairmanship of Christmas Seals 1971 for Trans-Pecos TB and RD Association covering nine counties. Campaign runs November to March to fund research on respiratory diseases including tuberculosis and emphysema. Fred Schumm notes progress but more work remains and education and prevention remain priorities.
