Antitrust suit filed against AT&T expands nationwide
Five independent telephone equipment firms filed a 25 million antitrust suit in federal court asserting Bell System monopoly power over the telephone equipment market. Plaintiffs seek a court order forcing AT&T and all Bell System companies to exit the station equipment business, claiming discriminatory practices and a strategy akin to electric utilities controlling light bulbs. The action names Northeastern Telephone Co and four others, including San Antonio Telephone Co, as plaintiffs and coordinates damages and treble damages if liable. The suit cites FCC changes in 1968 and names 24 defendants led by Western Electric with numerous regional Bell entities listed, all challenging access to Bell-owned networks and equipment.
