The Pay Board’s new policy includes a so called reality clause allowing review of ongoing bargaining and the equitable position of employees to justify higher raises. Sources say it could let boards approve 7 to 8 percent raises in some contracts and even monthly increases for years, though no decisions have been made.
Pecos Barstow Consolidated School District to hold a 5 30 p m board meeting at the school administration office with architects for vocational buildings in attendance. Harvest Day at First United Methodist Pecos on Nov 21 marks the 12th annual event with a goal of 7000. Alfie H Carleton will speak.
The Associated Press reports pleasant fall weather across the state with morning lows in the 30s in the west and north, 40s to 60s elsewhere and clear skies. Forecasts indicate little change through Sunday, slight warming by Friday in the north, and cooler spells returning later.
Washington subpoenas target three Utah executives in a probe of alleged pressure tactics by El Paso Gas to back legislation approving its merger with Pacific Northwest Gas. The inquiry follows testimony by Beverly C. Moore linking an unnamed Utah banker to a $100,000 interest-free deposit offer.
Balmorhea City Council approved repainting the water tower after sandblasting and minor repairs. Interior recoating and exterior paint will follow after bids are reviewed. The panel also accepted bids for a city pickup and approved paying bills, while signage removal discussion was tabled due to complaints about damaged signs.
Dallas AP report: recruit Johnnie Hartwell, 31, died after a pickup robbery ended in a gun duel with veteran officer James Clark, 40. Bowens, 39, the driver, survived with others wounded. Hartwell was in training at the Dallas Police Academy.
Dr. James Hefner director of the Texas Agriculture Experiment Station said harvesting begins today using a different planting pattern. The method aims to yield more plants per acre with higher overall production.
In Cambodia a Cambodian command spokesman said at least 25 people were killed and about 36 wounded after Viet Cong and North Vietnamese forces hit Phnom Penh airport and a nearby radio transmitting station. The attacks were coordinated with rockets and sappers assaulting both targets overnight.
A free measles vaccination clinic for Reeves County residents runs Sunday from 10 a.m. in the chamber of commerce banquet room at 506 S. Oak. A registered nurse administers vaccines for Rubella and red measles with a doctor on call. State health officials supply the vaccine. Sponsored by Reeves County Community Council and First Christian Church, the clinic serves children ages one to twelve. Texas reported over 8,000 measles cases last year with 20 preschool deaths.
Dian Reed, Home Demonstration agent for Reeves and Loving Counties, attended a district training conference in San Angelo on Monday and Tuesday. The two day event for Districts 6 and 7 focused on Training in FOCUS a program outlining national and state trends in family living and home economics. The Texas Agriculture Extension Service headquarters staff and home economics specialists from Texas A&M University presented the program.
Lt. Gov. Barnes employs state workers to compile a mass mail list on green cards and tape then transcribes to computer form for campaign use. Officials say the process aids state duties but questions remain on dual state and political purpose and funding.
