The House Appropriations Committee approved 71 billion dollars in defense funding for the current fiscal year citing the Soviet military buildup. The panel trimmed President Nixon's 73.5 billion request by 2.5 billion and warned against drastic cuts on the House floor next week.
Washington AP reports the Cost of Living Council broadened post freeze exemptions to 18.2 percent or more of the cost of living, covering used goods including cars and homes, custom items, and dues. The Pay Board may grant further exceptions to wage rules, while most firms will face spot checks and citizen complaints rather than pre approval.
Pecos gains a new Colonial Food Store at Washington and Iowa Streets, opening Friday at 7 a.m. The 3,600 square foot building includes a 2,400 square foot grocery area and a 1,200 square foot laundromat. Leroy Brown will manage with local clerks, and Maytag laundromats power the washers and dryers. Colonial operates 19 stores in San Angelo Abilene Brownwood Kermit Monahans and Brady with more planned. Hours are 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily.
A Pecos group filed in 143rd District Court for oral examinations of Reeves County deputies Raul Florez and John Lewis and others over the Oct. 31 shooting of Raymundo Carrasco at the Pecos race track. A 9:30 a.m. hearing is set for Dec 17 with Armendariz Armendariz law firm retained. Carrasco remains in serious condition in Odessa Medical Center Hospital.
Richard L. Toll 69, a Pecos resident, died at his home. Services 10 a.m. Friday at St. Mark's Episcopal Church with burial at Evergreen Cemetery. Toll had served as Pecos county attorney, U.S. Commissioner, and was active in Rotary and Boy Scouts. survived by Frances and three children. Gifts to St. Mark's building fund are requested in lieu of flowers.
Houston AP reports a former mental patient, George Albert Whittington Jr., 26, is charged with murder after five Tennessee teenagers were imprisoned Tuesday night. One victim, Eddie Eugene Seat, 18, of Dyersburg, was found drowned in a bathtub. Police found three teens, two boys and a girl, locked in a closet after an escapee warned officers. Remaining survivor is Robert Franklin Davis, 16.
Paul Armstrong longtime Pecos resident and business man died Wednesday after open heart surgery at Baylor University Medical Center. He was an associate with Producers Insurance Agency and an independent broker in oil and gas leasing. Funeral services are pending and survivors were not listed by press time. Police asked to hold Kenneth Colvin on grand larceny and three degree burglary charges as six youths from Dyersburg described a hitchhiking trip toward Houston with alleged drug briefcase incident.
Dr. Charles Miller of Texas A&M and Dr. James Hefner lead tests at the Pecos station on gin trash samples to measure retained chemical residues. The study aims to address pollution concerns by storing the material after initial tests to monitor residue over time.
Agriculture Secretary Clifford M. Hardin is reportedly ready to quit as White House officials hedge on the move. Republican strategists fear Farm Belt discontent could hurt 1972 prospects, while Nixon notes parity ratios recently at 69 percent and seeks measures to lift farmer sentiment.
