A town observes a barefoot preacher named Brother John, claiming divine healing while denying Moses could solve the Red Bluff recreational dispute. The column laments weather prophets and jokes about forming a local weather board, promising a large rainfall except for a cantaloupe patch.
The city county WPA project near Pecos will begin after the cemetery work and will run about 12 months. The WPA allocates 28641 for labor plus six dollars per man month for trucks or materials, supporting 110 workers. Improvements cover primary and secondary roads, drainage, widening shoulders, and fencing, with work on Fort Stockton highway, Sullivan Bridge road, refinery road, and Higgins road.
The Hepecos Chamber of Commerce launched a city wide membership drive on Wednesday. Early turnout exceeded 60 new members raising revenue and boosting hopes to reach a 6000 dollar yearly budget. A quota system was set to balance fees across business lines and individuals. Twenty two canvassers faced unreachable locals and out of town officials before final sign ups. Captain M L Swinehart praised high cooperation with about 95 percent of contacted persons ready to share in the campaign.
L A Woods state superintendent of public instruction urged Lions Club members to back an education crime prevention drive. He traced schooling from constitutional origins, contrasted education costs with crime costs, and warned that out of 1 563 000 tholastics about 100 000 were unenrolled, contributing to crime.
Mr and Mrs Jack Silliman celebrate the birth of their son Frank Thomas Silliman at a local Fort Stockton hospital this week.
Pecos city council assumed duties of a tax board of equalization this week, replacing a separate board. Officials cited difficulty in finding willing members and the value of carry-over members, deciding aldermen will serve as the equalization board for the time being and plan to continue.
Nominees for Lions Club officers for the coming year were named at a luncheon by a committee of former presidents. For president candidates include Buddy Withers Byron Lackey Oliver Harrison George Nagel R Henry Blackwell and Vestel Lott.
County Judge J. B. Woolfolk awarded two five dollar prizes to students for high scholastic rankings. Annabel Lee, elementary, averaged 94.9 and won her division. Suzanne Ross, third grade, had 95.2 but was disqualified for prior award. Martha Jane Holley, junior high, won her division with 94.1.
Work on a $6000 WPA project at Fairview Cemetery ends this week after more than three months. The program included 1500 feet of masonry wall 900 feet of water lines 560 feet of ¾ inch lines reconstruction of the south and east wire fence and caliche topping and cleanup. Late public donations raised the fund beyond 1200 dollars with additional gifts from local residents and businesses.
The Far West Reeves county oil test known as the H. F. Anthony No. 1 Richard Shaw north of Toyah was cleaned out this week after two gun shots. Drilled to 1900 feet it was shot with 20 quarts from 1800 to 1812 then bridged and plugged back. A second shot of 30 quarts from 1630 to 1644 produced a flow and bridged about 150 feet up. D K Eidse and O P Becken, associates of H F Anthony, left for Winnipeg Manitoba.
About a hundred West Texas ranchers and livestock feeders attended the Balmorhea Extension Service Experiment Station sixth annual Feeder's Day and barbecue. Cattle inspection and reports on 195 day feeding trials were presented. Station manager John J. Bayles explained feeding mixtures while cattle from 65 good to choice JEF ranch in the Davis Mountains were loaded for Fort Worth where carcass grading will verify feeding value. Speakers included Pecos Chamber official M L Swinhart and home demonstration agent Ruth Thompson with talks on farming diversification and women on the farm. 4-H work in Ward County. Balmorhea Chamber secretary Sam Bays. Supt Bayles. and Sonora station chief W H Cameron.
The district court murder trial of Hugh White began in Monahans after jury selection. An additional 20 jurors were summoned after 100 men were exhausted. White was arrested near San Antonio for transporting the body of G. F. Weaver of Royalty on a tour from Royalty to Carlsbad and San Antonio.
A Wink and Kermit group tours West Texas and New Mexico on June 5 7 and 9 promoting the Kermit rodeo. With the Kermit High School Band the trippers will stop in Pecos on Wednesday June 7 at noon.
District Judge J A Drane granted a temporary injunction restricting Kyle Biggs of Pecos from trespassing on Red Bluff Water Power Control District property without permission or a $1 daily permit. The ruling lasts until September, with a request to make it permanent when court reconvenes.
Pecos chapter of the Permian Basin Game and Fish Protective Association postponed the election of permanent officers until Tuesday night June 13. Dr. J. L. Kincannon serves as temporary chairman and Harrison Beauchamp as temporary secretary treasurer. A district meeting is planned for late June with the next district gathering set for Odessa on May 31. Topics included Red Bluff recreational issue and preventing fish loss in irrigation canals with Fritz Estill of Kermit, T. B. Pruett of Pecos, and Dr. Kincannon speaking.
Balmorhea farmers allied with agricultural experts and the Bureau of Agricultural Economics to obtain free classing service. The group, leaders from the Madera Valley One- Variety Cotton Community, aims to save about 800 dollars in grading charges and to record cotton grade and staple for the valley. The plan allows sale in large lump lots for quicker, higher price sales, with Pecos to follow this week.
Mr and Mrs Darwin Hunter of Pecos announce the birth of a son in a Pecos hospital this week. The newborn has been named Donald Hunter.
Reeves County farmers can receive about $76,000 under the 1939 AAA plan, including roughly $46,000 in conservation payments for soil conservation and soil-building practices and about $30,000 from parity cotton price adjustments. Reviews detail payment rates, unit measures for soil-building work, and farm productivity adjustments.
Ensign Joseph H. Patterson of Oklahoma City Oklahoma was among Squalus disaster victims and was believed to be the son of Joe Patterson a prominent Pecos real estate owner in Oklahoma.
Balmorhea and Saragosa youths organize the county second 4-H club during Balmorhea Experiment Station field day. Ted Johnston guides the project with officers Billy Honaker president Charles Hoefs vice president Charles Berkstresser secretary Harvey Moore reporter. Members include W. D. Chandler Wilkes Fowler John Bayles. The seven join calf feeding projects funded by the cattlemen's association. Last week Reeves county saw its first 4-H club organized in Pecos.
Mr and Mrs T J Sisk longtime Pecos residents are seriously ill. Mr Sisk remains in a local hospital while Mrs Sisk is ill at home. They recently observed their 66th wedding anniversary after living in West Texas for over 50 years.
Mr and Mrs Cordie Wilkins of Cordie Don welcome a newborn born this week in a Pecos san itarium. The brief notice records the birth and parental names.
