A tongue in cheek note by George Baker in the Fort Stockton Pioneer claims a first attempt at rainmaking produced widespread moisture with one exception Barney Hubbs and his cantaloupes. The piece jokes about perfecting technique, unintended floods near Big Spring, and a publicity trade over Pecos oil.
County Agent Ted Johnston outlined 4-H work in Reeves county before the Rotary Club. He described Pecos Toyah and Balmorhea Saragosa groups and noted members' projects including cattle feeding, a garden, and a quail venture. Capt M L Swinehart announced rodeo booster trips with several additional cars pledged.
Mrs. Louis Roberson is named Pecos sponsor for the Big Spring rodeo on June 25 and 26. Her expenses will be paid jointly by the rodeo association and the Chamber of Commerce. In Big Spring she will compete with West Texas cowgirls in events to test horsemanship and cowgirl skills.
Pecos Chamber of Commerce sponsors a two day motorcade spreading rodeo invitations across 16 towns. Capt E M Wells will escort with state police. The route includes Monahans Odessa Midland Big Spring Kermit Wink Pyote Barstow and Balmorhea with stops and Luncheons, ending back in Pecos each day. Over a hundred townspeople join the booster band in western attire with Pecos High Band playing brief concerts.
The Pecos Chamber of Commerce drive for larger membership and funds exceeded targets with 79 new members and $6,000 pledged. Capt. M. L. Swinehart credited volunteers and the public, forecasting the goal would be exceeded as reports arrive. A $6,000 pledge is about $1,600 above last year, funding a planned work program including park projects, highway improvements, Pecos municipal building, and economic development efforts.
The Pecos Chamber of Commerce voted at Tuesday’s luncheon to meet once a month hereafter, on the second Tuesday, rather than every other week. Members agreed that a single well attended session monthly would be more effective than frequent smaller gatherings.
Miss Elizabeth Hendricks, a Pecos high school commercial teacher, has accepted a position in Odessa in the tax assessor's office starting Thursday. Her resignation follows a recent re election to her Pecos post. She previously taught in Pecos after moving from her Odessa home.
Captain E. M. Wells reports a decline in Western Texas auto and pedestrian deaths for the first five months of 1939, with 15 auto and one pedestrian deaths versus 26 autos and six pedestrians in 1938. The meeting also noted 1938 totals down 18 percent from 1937 and discussed county variances.
Deferred grazing on nearly 100000 acres in Reeves County started June 1. Ranchers must move remaining cattle immediately. Last year 93000 acres were deferred. about the same expected this year with payments at 40 percent of deferral and 25 percent of total range acreage.
Rain fell across much of the Trans-Pecos area Sunday and Monday nights with Pecos receiving just over half an inch. County Agent Ted Johnston noted moisture will aid early growth but requires more rainfall to be permanent. Showers came with electrical displays.
A large sum rumored to be in a lady's purse near Balmorhea Tuesday proved to be play money linked to a beverage brand. Investigators found a Dorothy H. Barnes Kansas City license, a match folder, coins, and other trifles amid the humorous misdirection.
Hugh White was convicted of murder and given a 40 year term by a Ward County jury last Thursday. He faced the killing of G. S. Punk Weaver, a 21 year old Royalty filling station worker, after entering a not guilty plea. District Attorney William L. Kerr led the prosecution with Ward County Attorney Tom Neal. defense attorneys were William O. Coldwell and R. T. Harris.
Pecos water use is up about 15 percent from a year ago, says Mayor B A Toliver. Wells and the system are in good condition and Well No 3 has been rehabilitated for the upcoming heavy demand period.
An appropriation of 300000 dollars for State Highway 17 improvement was announced by Rep. James H. Goodman. Jeff Davis county receives 250000 dollars and Reeves county 50000 dollars for grading and drainage. Construction could start soon with completion forecast by 1940.
The Pecos Lions Club will elect new officers at next Wednesday's luncheon. Nominations from the floor and a past presidents committee include candidates for president, secretary, Lion Tamer, tail-twister, and directors with a long list of names such as Buddy Withers, Henry Blackwell, George Nagel, Rev. Oliver Harrison, Dr. Byron Lackey, Vestel Lott, Jack Parker, Jess Bush, I. E. Chesney, Horace Heath, Harry Pryor, Gib Graves, Jim Durnal, Buck Jackson, Jimmy Yancy, Norman Eisenwine, W. W. Ragsdale, W. H. Kesler, Cotton Downs, Guy Walker, Pop Biggs, and Harold G. Meyer.
Some 150 to 200 West Texas youths from many counties gather at Camp Splitgarber near Balmorhea for a three day 4-H Club Encampment. County agents and A and M College specialists will lead lectures on livestock feeding pasture management and game conservation. Id Johnson state 4-H Club agent will supervise activities including trips to McDonald Observatory and a barbecue closing day. County Agent Ted Johnston and Pecos 4-H Club members plan to attend.
District Engineer J D Shaw announced a 44 000 project to extend rural electrification from Red Bluff reservoir toward Barstow and north of Pecos. J M Callahan Co of El Paso will manage the job with 30 to 35 men over 60 to 90 days, funded by a bond issued via an El Paso bank.
Pecos will observe Flag Week June 8 to 14 with patriotic ceremonies led by Capt M L Swinehart who chairs the local committee Hill D Hudson will be the principal speaker The Flag Day parade Friday at 4 led by the Pecos high school band invites all to march carrying a flag Parade forms at the Chamber of Commerce building and flags are available from local merchants The observance is endorsed by the Chamber of Commerce and the Lions Club
The Pecos City Council acting as a board of equalization completed its work this week. No hearing date is set yet. When set, property owners with increased valuations will be notified and can appear at hearings to show why the increases should not stand.
Prospects improve for Celebration rodeo on July 3 and 4 as officials report high interest and record inquiries. Buck Jackson forecasts more and better contestants. Tuffy Alley leads preparations while stock and equipment are prepared. Grandstand expansion brings capacity to about 2,500 with $2,500 in cash and prizes. 50 year badges offered to old-timers.
The WPA farm-to-market road project for the county is delayed about 30 days due to an emergency at Balmorhea. All WPA workers are diverted to dam-related trench work, as officials rush to complete the project before floods. Funding totals $28,641 to close unimproved gaps into the city.
Pecos will be well represented at the fourth annual Fort Stockton Water Carnival June 9 to 11. The Pecos High School Band will march in the Friday parade and Kathleen Lewis will compete as Miss Pecos Enterprise. Entries may come from the Chamber of Commerce KIM service clubs and local firms with several Pecos golfers joining the golf tournament.
Graduation week in Pecos features three local students receiving degrees. Miss Georgia Wadley earned a Texas Tech diploma in Lubbock early in the week, while Miss Mary Sue Johnson and Marvin Cowan Jr. completed degrees at Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene Thursday.
