A rattlesnake infestation is noted near Barstow and Pecos, with bites already reported in a child at Barstow. O J Bryan shares a pamphlet offering practical guidance on rattlesnake bites and safety steps to take.
Instructions warn to apply a loose ligature a few inches above the bite to delay venom spread, then inject antivenin as soon as possible under the thigh or abdomen skin. After injection, release the tourniquet to restore circulation and avoid tissue damage.
When antivenin is unavailable, two methods remain: incision and suction. A cross-cut incision is made through the skin at each fang mark about 1-4 inch deep and 1-2 inch long to let venom escape. Suction may follow, kept for twenty minutes every hour for fifteen hours or until bleeding ceases.
Guidance warns against stimulants, alcohol, and injections such as potassium permanganate as antidotes. Exercise or alcohol may spread poison faster. Do not rely on snake bite cures or home remedies. Do not cauterize the bite with acids.
Four Pecos Lions depart Saturday for the state convention of Lions clubs. Local representatives include President Pop Biggs Guy F E Walker G R Lay and G C Parker in the crew headed to Lubbock.
The frame home of T. E. Reeves in North Pecos was destroyed by a fire around 9:30 p.m. Sunday. No one was home when the blaze started and firefighters arrived after the fire had gained headway. The house was partially insured.
The Pecos region produces cotton far above Texas average, per U S Department of Agriculture samples from Electric Gin Company gins in 1932. Only 4.4 percent statewide reached extra white. Pecos gins achieved 67.4 percent extra white.
J W Goode, 60, a Saragosa farmer, heads to Barstow for trial in 109th district court on charges he shot neighbor Fane Downs, 30, at the Baker garage. A 108‑man special venire and 75 witnesses are summoned as Pecos legal teams prepare. Downs died ten days after the March incident.
Jesse Jones of Houston, longtime director of the Reconstruction Finance Corporation, has been elected chairman of the board, becoming head of the world’s largest financial organization. The selection reflects Texas pride in supplying a national leader for the RFC.
Reeves county wildcat No 1 Johnson 1015 ft from section corner in block 4 L and G Ry Co survey on 10000 acres. Merry Bros and Perini of San Angelo plan rotary then cable tool drilling for inter est in the venture. Jim Dunnigan and Frank Drakeny to drill from Abilene and Wink respectively. Location lies across Pecos River about five miles west of Plains Rector 1 Lee Monroe. Previous drillers Shipley and Dallas assoc drilled 7500 ft+ before quartz schist exit.
Pecos lived up to advance predictions at the West Texas Chamber of Commerce convention in Big Spring drawing about six thousand attendees. The town promoted Pecos and its resources with banners badges and folders while Dudley Yard was confirmed as a district director.
The Pecos high school will award diplomas to 28 seniors in the commencement exercises at 8:15 Friday night in the high school auditorium. Valedictorian is Bob Collie with a 95.15 average. salutatorian is Mary Catherine Couch with 94. Bob Collie and Mary Catherine Couch will receive scholarships. The program includes processional, invocations, salutatory, class song, valedictory, address, diploma presentations, scholarships, and benediction. The week featured baccalaureate by Rev. John W. Byrd, Class Day with color drill and readings, and a senior picnic and outing Tuesday.
The Camber of Commerce asks Congressman Thomason and Vice President Garner to continue federal highway funds for Texas. Thomason says he has consulted the House Roads Committee Chairman and that highway funds are to be included in the President’s public works and rehabilitation program. Garner’s secretary replies similarly.
The Pecos Mercantile Co announces it will handle a new popular priced washing machine named the Faultless. It is electrically operated, with an appearance and construction described as faultless, and priced much lower than typical for such machines.
Mr and Mrs Horace Woodruff welcomed a 5 pound boy at 5 o'clock Wednesday morning in Pecos. The mother before marriage was Miss Isyl Alexander.
Garnett W. Padgett, a farmer from Imperial, and Helen Elizabeth Neistroy of Floresville, Texas, both deaf mutes, were united in marriage before Justice of the Peace W. E. Morrison after meeting at the Institute for Deaf Mutes in Austin.
City building permits drop to 25 cents and inspections to 1 dollar boosting repair and construction activity. Secretary to conduct inspections and receive 25 percent of the fee for expenses. Alderman B T Jiggs led the move with unanimous council support. The panel also abolishes alderman meeting compensation and bans city gasoline use to city business only. A demand to Texas Louisiana Power Co seeks domestic rate parity.
Baseball fans are set for Sunday at 3 PM in the colored town section as Pecos meets Roswell in a feature clash. Pecos aims to win with a strong, entertaining brand of ball and a determined squad.
A fire last Sunday at Madera Springs in the Davis mountains destroyed the dining room and a nearby house, with the interior a total loss. The origin is undetermined. Owners plan repairs and rebuilding.
Pecos will host a five week summer program starting Wednesday May 24 with classes six days weekly. Grammar grades tuition is 10 dollars taught by Mrs. Wylie Cole and high school at 12.50 dollars taught by R. H. Blackwell. Fees are 2.50 lower than last year.
Reeves county may send eight young men to the Civilian Conservation Corps. The local RF C committee was advised Thursday by Lawrence Westbrook, chairman of the Texas Relief Commission. The eight are to report to Fort Bliss not later than May 20 for consignment to a government conservation camp.
The state will build a new highway between Pecos and Fort Stockton shortening the trip by three miles. A survey by George Achterberg shows the route at 49 miles instead of 52. The road will head directly from Pecos toward Stockton and pass Toyah lake, offering a depot for duck hunters. County Judge J B Woolfolk estimates about 1500 for right of way as plans connect the Grandfa road to the Stockton highway at the earliest point.
Analysis of Pecos city well water from 165 foot depth, prepared by W D Collins, indicates lower total dissolved solids and hardness than present city water. The report, requested by Hoyt Gale and shared with Mayor Toliver, notes higher bicarbonate and mineral content with variations between depths, suggesting favorable soft water potential though full accuracy requires further testing.
A score or more cranes crossed Pecos Thursday morning prompting comment from old timers and various forecasts about upcoming weather.
A townsite near the Red Bluff damsite is promoted by F T Mace who has developed West Texas towns. He mapped streets and lots on Highway 17 in a straight line from the damsite and has already sold more than two dozen lots. An advertisement appears in the issue of the Ionter prise.
The Texas legislature approved adding Andrews County to the 109th district, now presided by Judge Crane with Reeves, Ward, Loving, Crane, and Winkler counties. Effective September term, the change expands territory for Judge Crane and District Attorney Bill Kerr. Also noted, Pecos Boy Scout troop in Buffalo Trail council achieved 100 percent, with camp set for July 12–26 and fees of $5 for one week or $12 for two weeks.
Mary Catherine Couch daughter of Mr and Mrs R N Couch won the 1933 Letha Prewit Memorial award at Pecos high senior day. The cup honors Miss Prewit a noted student who died in a 1930 plane accident. The award recognizes scholarship sportsmanship and womanhood and has previously gone to Mildred Ruhlen Elizabeth Lilley and Evelyn Bowie.
Western movie star Tom Keene and his wife paused in Pe cos last week for a night at Hotel Brandon. Described as a genuine good fellow, he is en route to New Orleans for a pleasure visit as Paramount prepares a new picture.
Mr. and Mrs. C. H. McCune celebrate the arrival of a 9 1-2 pound girl born early this week at the Burford refinery.
