Four Die In Ammonia Tank Truck Explosion
Federal and state investigators probe a freeway crash that killed four and injured about 200 when an ammonia tanker plunged from an overpass onto the Southwest Freeway Loop 610 area in Houston. The truck carried 19 tons of anhydrous ammonia, exploded on impact, triggering a dense white fumes cloud and mass evacuations nearby. Many injured were treated. 68 remained hospitalized with at least seven in critical condition. Authorities noted up to 20 vehicles were involved in the wreck and a portion of the interchange was temporarily shut as residents fled fumes and debris.
