City officials will not accept the lone bid of 27575 for 281308 square feet of city land and will negotiate with Kenneth Rothe and Sam Parker. Rothe offered 15 cents per square foot for 300 feet frontage plus 10 cents per foot for 265 feet and 5000 for two extra lots, below the 42196.20 city estimate. The council will draft a plat showing included footage and pursue talks later, while also canvassing April 24 street closing results and supporting Southwest Airlines landing at Midland airport.
Pecos High School senior Mark Smith won first place at the UIL state science meet after advancing from district and regional wins. He is the local Voice of Democracy and National Merit Scholar, turning down a merit scholarship to Rice in favor of Texas A M geophysics.

He outlined 1977 to 1980 goals across transportation agriculture mining utilities manufacturing construction and services with four aims to protect freedom and public interest while cutting costs.
M A Cate of Verhalen attended the Texas Association of Rural Water Corporations spring meeting in Austin on May 7 8. The two day session discussed Public Utility Commission Proposed Substantive Rules. Cate as District 7 director plans district meetings to advise rural water operators on PUC requirements.
Tornadoes and severe storms swept across Texas and nearby states causing property damage including two barns and a building roof loss while no injuries were reported. Widespread hail and flash floods were noted with a cold front driving continued storms from Southeast Texas toward the coast and into the southern plains.
