Sen Sam J Ervin Jr urges the Justice Department to back a bill he introduced nearly a year ago requiring federal criminal defendants to be brought to trial within 60 days. He criticized the department for remaining silent on preventive detention and related reforms.
Beirut's Al Liwaa reports an Israeli force crossed about 500 yards into Lebanon near Ramia Village and bulldozed a road for three hours to create a link with dirt roads built since the 1967 war. The operation aids searches for Palestinian guerrillas.
The 13,000-member signal men's union engages in government mediated discussions to avert a nationwide rail walkout planned for next week. An earthquake in southern Turkey killed at least 58 people and injured hundreds. Burdur Province Governor Esref Ayhan confirmed 18 deaths in Burdur and 20 in each of two nearby villages, with 70 percent of Burdur’s buildings destroyed and entire outlying villages reportedly collapsed.
Indians in WINNER South Dakota win a federal hearing on charges that the town's poor Indian Town section is denied equitable municipal services. Former President Lyndon B. Johnson recalls Soviet Premier Kosygin using the hot line to warn Moscow would act if needed during the June 10 1957 Arab-Israeli war. Johnson says he ordered the U S 6th Fleet closer to the Syrian coast as a readiness signal.

Senator Philip Hart and other lawmakers viewed a new bumper design claimed to be cheaper, safer, and more efficient than industry plans to meet 1973 federal standards. Test videos and test drives were shown on a Senate loading platform as the Hornet bumped along at over five miles an hour. Hart was briefly jolted but unharmed.
Carlton and Eva Williams announce a large Expansion Sale to mark the renovation and doubling of Williams Dept Store in Pecos. The store's remodel added over twice the floor space and new interiors. sale runs from tomorrow through Saturday to thank customers and invite new visitors.
Final rites set for Carlotta Madrid Molinar, 1 year old, at Santa Rosa Catholic Church at 4 this afternoon. She died yesterday morning at Memorial Hospital after being born November 4, 1969 in Pecos. Burial at Santa Rosa Cemetery. survived by parents Isabel and Molinar, six brothers and four sisters. Local merchants list various clothing and shoe brands as part of the notice.
A musical comedy Senor Pimpernel will be performed tomorrow and Friday at 8 p.m. in the Pecos High School auditorium. Tickets are 75 cents for adults and 50 cents for students. Music directed by Bill Carrico with drama directors Jonny Williams and Sandra Bailey. Cast includes Ernie Felts as Andy and many others with stage band and production staff listed.
In 143rd District Court Judge J H Starley sentenced Ramon Armendariz two six year terms for theft of cooling coils with probation possible after defense request. Celestino Fackey Rayos Jr received a six year probated term for marijuana possession. Richard Ybarra had a six year term revoked after outcome on March 25 1968. Michael Pittman marijuana case postponed to June for additional defense review.
Southwest Texas area west of the Pecos reports partly cloudy skies and mild conditions. Tonight lowers to about 40 degrees with a high near 82 degrees expected Thursday.
The Pecos Chamber of Commerce endorsed Clean Water Amendment Four at its monthly meeting, urging voters to support the measure in the May 18 election. The board also discussed opposing State Corporate Profits Tax and State Income Tax, roadside sign plans, and a city beautification campaign using local youth.
Funeral services for Juan Anaya 59 will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Santa Rosa Church. He died at 8:40 a.m. yesterday in Kermit hospital after illness starting Sunday. Burial at Santa Rosa Cemetery. Born June 24 19xx in Mexico, he lived at 1000 S. Pecan. Survived by widow Bernardina of Pecos, one son Elias of Odessa, three daughters Edena Mendoza Carolyn Gutierrez of Pecos and Amelia Contreras of Germany, 19 grandchildren and one great grandchild, three brothers Guadalupe Atanacio and Jesus of Pecos, two sisters Mercedes Reyes and Juanita Barraza of Pecos.
The Cotton Crusaders bring a trunk show of the Cotton Craft Collection to Pecos Valley Country Club with two free showings at 10 a.m. and 1 30 p.m. tomorrow. The event features 75 to 80 cotton items by Lubbock volunteers, including wall hangings and kitchen ware. luncheon at noon costs 32 per person, with a brief business meeting during lunch.
Ted Painter, Spec. 4, son of Mr. and Mrs. N F Painter of Pecos, received the Army Commendation Medal for service in newspaper and radio work with the 82nd Airborne Division at Ft. Bragg from Oct 1969 to May 1971. He was discharged May 3 and plans to study law after attending Texas Tech and UT prior to enlistment.
