Dr Reginald G Bickford of UC San Diego describes a new computerized technique that shortens brain wave data from about 150 pages to one page in under five minutes. He notes current systems need about 130 pages and take days to interpret.
In New Orleans AP report, 25 Texas and five other Southern states' school desegregation suits ask the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for swift actions. They rely on a Supreme Court ruling allowing busing to achieve racial balance and seek integration by the 1971-72 school year. NAACP Legal Defense Fund and lawyers filed a joint brief. States include Alabama Florida Georgia Louisiana and Mississippi.
Severe weather eased after thunderstorms hail and heavy rains lashed the South and Central Plains to the Central Gulf. Tornadoes were sighted near Eufaula Oklahoma and Salina Kansas with no injuries reported. Nebraska faced flash floods with highways closed and towns like Greenwood and David City drenched.
A defector, Dr. Dang Tan, says Hanoi subjects American prisoners of war to brutal interrogation and uses them for propaganda. He claims prisoners are paraded through streets in Hanoi and other cities for show.
Charles Tex Watson 25 of Capeville Texas pleaded innocent and innocent by reason of insanity to the Sharon Tate murders. His trial set for July 19 as the sole male Manson family member to face charges in a separate trial. He was once committed to a mental hospital after extradition from Texas.
Oklahoma Highway Commission approved 1.1 million to replace a stoplight with an interchange in Lawton on the Bailey Turnpike to reach interstate status. Chairman Charlie Payne of Lawton said the move would put Oklahoma in the main street of America and could spur Texas to build an expressway toward I-20 west of Fort Worth. Payne added he wants Oklahoma to be ahead of Texas in something.
Oklahoma faces a severe drought cutting the 1971 winter wheat crop to an estimated 62.4 million bushels, about two thirds of earlier expectations, according to the U S Crop Reporting Service. Agriculture statistician D D Pittman warned conditions could improve or worsen before harvest as dryness persists.
In Austin on Monday Governor Smith faced questions as lawmakers debated the 903 million tax bill. Calls to recall and veto parts clashed with Smith’s stance that he can only veto the entire bill or pass it.
The Agriculture Department estimated Texas wheat at 27.8 million bushels, far below earlier forecasts, with rainfall since December minimal and many fields plowed under. The national harvest is forecast at about 1.62 billion bushels, down nine percent from 1970.

The US grand jury continues investigating the Sharpstown State Bank closing in Houston earlier this year. State Banking Commissioner Robert E. Stewart testified. the SEC suit names Sharp and 26 others in stock manipulation claims involving National Bankers Life Insurance Co. Also noted are redistricting subcommittees and depositions planned across multiple states with astronaut witnesses and Jesuit officials due to be questioned.
FBI and Texas Rangers investigate the weekend killings of Hazle Mathis and his 6 year old son Van Lee Mathis in Shiner Texas. Patrolmen L B Gamble and Johnnie Earl Aycock are accused amid conflicting accounts and a crossfire death. The U S Justice Department civil rights division will review the case.
Monahans Texas police report the Monday night capture of the fourth of seven escapees from the May 2 break. Timothy Youngblood, 21, identified as the jailer bludgeoner, was nabbed about 35 miles southwest near Cayyanosa after robbing a man near Odessa when a bandit swapped clothing and stole the victim’s car. Remaining at large are Robert Wright 21 Raymond Hart 31 and Calvin Thomas 25.
Roger Newcomb was elected president of the Big Bend district FFA for 1971. Ronald Box won the District Public Speaking contest and received the District Lone Star Farmer award for his extensive chapter and district activities, with Area II convention at Ft. Stockton upcoming.
James Harold Thompson pleaded guilty in 143rd District Court in Pecos to theft of a large amount of equipment from Jim Murphy. Judge J H Starley probated a four year term. Thompson was represented by Bert Smith of Andrews.
Ronald R. Winfrey has been elected Editor in Chief of The St. Mary's Law Journal at St. Mary's University in San Antonio Texas. The journal publishes scholarly material of value to students and the legal community and is edited by a student Editorial Board. Winfrey, in his second year of law school, will graduate in May 1972 and is married to Margie Fuentes of Pecos.
