The U S Chamber of Commerce reports May 10 as the first day the average American works for himself rather than the government. Through that date all earnings go to taxes this year. The chamber notes May 9 was Tax Freedom Day last year.
The Joint Congressional Committee on Congressional Operations says it will hold four days of hearings next month to determine if switching from fiscal to calendar year budgeting would allow Congress a timelier review of the President's budget.
Tornadoes and severe storms eased in the South and central Plains while heavy rain prompted flash flood alerts in Nebraska. Tornadoes injured three in Singleton Mississippi and damaged farms in southwest Kansas, with another twister near Waco Texas. Funnel clouds were spotted over Nebraska, Mississippi and Texas.
The Agriculture Department reports growing global competition in world cotton trade and urges a streamlining of U.S. industry operations to improve market position. The outlook appears in a weekly Foreign Agricultural Service report.
Police widened their hunt for four armed robbers who stole 18400 from a bank manager in Guasave Sinaloa on Saturday. Three Mexican Army platoons joined the pursuit in the mountains, two searchers wounded in a brief gunbattle. The robbers fled in a stolen truck after a car broke down and fled on foot after abandoning the vehicle.
The Associated Press Bureau Chief in Oklahoma Carl A Rogan died of cancer Sunday in an Oklahoma City hospital. Rogan, 41, led AP operations in Oklahoma since 1967 and served as state news editor for four years prior. He joined AP in Tulsa in 1958.
A federal judge considers a motion for James R. Hoffa to serve five years for pension fraud and eight years for jury tampering concurrently. A favorable ruling could enable Hoffa to seek parole from Lewisburg prison before the Teamsters convention in Miami on July 5, potentially renewing his bid for re election.
Eighteen year old Ben Chaney, convicted Saturday of killing a Miami insurance man, goes on trial in June for the slayings of two Florida Atlantic University coeds. Chaney is brother of civil rights worker James Chaney slain in Philadelphia Mississippi in 1964.
An underwater salvage team from Miami returned after six weeks of digging off Haiti. They displayed a 12 foot bronze cannon and coins from 18th century wrecks, claiming the haul only scratches the surface of valuables believed to lie 175 years untouched. Tim Watkins of Marine Explorations Co. touted the cannon as the largest ever brought into the United States.
Bobby Kay Winters 27 is recaptured in Dallas after escaping Ward County Jail in Mona han s with six others. The forgery suspect was alone at arrest and returned to Ward County Jail. Earlier this week Raymond Hayes 25 of Midland and Donnie Elder 22 formerly of Monahans were also recaptured.
Dr. E W Schmidt was elected vice president of the Texas Medical Association at the House of Delegates final meeting in Houston. Dr Braswell Locker was named president elect, to become president next year, with Dr Bryan York secretary, Dr Charles P Hardwick s treasurer, Dr Jack E Lee speaker, and Dr Travis Smith vice speaker. Funeral services were held for Henry Bruce Rich Sr 65 in Monahans. He died Friday at home after a long residence there since 1946. Survivors include his wife two daughters three sons and many relatives. A prison escape report notes Timothy Youngblood and other inmates fled after overpowering Jailer W M Weed. Sheriff John T Ashcraft escorted the escapees back to Ward County. Miss Winters a Pecos native was convicted of forgery and given a five year term.
The Pecos Volunteer Fire Dept awarded J P Stubblefield the city building inspector a gift certificate for guiding the new fire hall project. Fire Chief J T Precit led the presentation. Separate incidents included Russell Smith's car damage after a hit and run at 3rd and Eddy. A 16 year old was arrested for drunk driving and theft. Annie Mae Stanton reported a broken west window, and Nanny Cleaners saw a concrete pane tossed through their plate glass.
Reading teachers and interested adults may join a local chapter of the International Reading Association. A meeting at 7 30 p m May 14 at Alamo Junior High Auditorium Midland Virginia will discuss formation with IRA Field Consultant D Yates in attendance. Local sponsor Dorothy Johnston and others back the effort.
Western Abstract Company under new ownership Eddie Daniel and Roy Prewit joined the Pecos Chamber of Commerce as new members. Membership chair Bill Pigman announced the welcome, noting connections with the West Texas Education Center and Odessa College representation. Further information via Mrs Johnston at 563-2380.
The chamber directors hold the May meeting tomorrow at 12 noon in a new location Ben's Spanish Inn. An Executive Committee meeting precedes the luncheon at 11 a.m. in the Director's Room at the chamber office.
Three persons were indicted by the Grand Jury in 143rd District Court last Friday. two are in custody. One name is withheld until apprehended for swindling by worthless checks totaling 95 dollars. J D Prosise faces a fondling charge involving a minor under 14 with bond set at 2500 dollars. Jerold Leroy Baker is indicted for the theft of a 1970 Dodge Charger owned by C L Elkins II and remains jailed on 1500 dollars bond. The week’s criminal jury action began with a postponed docket as defense representation was disrupted by the late Murray Howze. List of Howze’s cases and others to be heard includes Otis Williams, Severo Fuentes, John Bardin, Frank Rivera, Roy Avila, Felix Olguin Ornelas, Charles Christopher Mallos and many more. Joe Frank Hernandez’s case is postponed due to narcotic incarceration elsewhere.
Two people are in Memorial Hospital with undetermined injuries after a 1:05 p.m. crash yesterday at 9th and Cedar. Ferman Lara and his wife Ysabel, both in their 60s, were in a 1967 Dodge Dart that collided with Jovita Adams Tovar’s 1966 Ford Station Wagon, injuring Tovar’s children Ramon and Sara as well.
The Pecos High School student body elected varsity captains Brenda Moon, Brenda Moore, and Carolyn Clark and junior captains Joy Ferguson Kathy McAnally and Janice Williams. Junior varsity leaders are Laura Allen Lana Choate Peggy McCarty with sophomores Connie Beckham Betty Hartnett Martha Straughan and Becky Chavez as first runner-up.
Congressman Richard White announces all twelve counties in the Sixteenth District are eligible for emergency loans to farmers and ranchers. FHA Administrator James V. Smith notes 235 of 254 Texas counties are eligible due to the drought. Farmers should contact local County Supervisors of the Farmers Home Administration for information.
The Bureau of Reclamation awards a $119,814 contract to Hudson Starks Construction Company of Colorado City to clear salt cedar along a ten mile stretch of the Pecos River from ten miles north to three miles south of Pecos in Ward and Reeves Counties. The Enterprise was notified by Sef John Tower.
The Pecos Eagles dropped the district title race at Andrews in 4 1/2 innings, leaving Pecos tied with Kermit at 7-3 in district play. Ernie Calanchi started on the mound with relievers Jim White and Donald Walker. Mike Hilton walked in a Pecos run. Pecos hosts Monahans next, then travels to Seminole on May 18 to face the Indians.
Staff Sergeant Ventura Franco son of Mrs Rosalia R Franco 113 S Peach St Pecos has been honored for aiding his Air Weather Service unit to win the 1970 Centor Award named for Lt Gen William O Senter. He works as an aircraft maintenance technician in the 55th Weather Reconnaissance Squadron at McClellan AFB California.
A cold front in Southwest Texas a low in the Panhandle and a warm front in North Texas moved toward each other this morning bringing thunderstorms and rain showers. Skies were clear in the extreme west, with cloudiness and warm temps elsewhere. Thunderheads and hail fell in Johnson County, a tornado funnel in Bosque County Sunday did not touch ground, and big storms struck DeLeon Groesbeck Gainesville and near Wichita Falls. West of the Pecos: fair through Tuesday. High Tuesday 78 to 98, low tonight 38 to 62.
