The Republican National Committee unanimously moved the 1972 GOP convention from San Diego to Miami Beach due to rising costs and arena disputes. Dates Aug 21 to 23 remain. The change follows friction with the San Diego arena operator and concerns over funding and security resources.
New Democratic party rules filed with the Secretary of State authorise caucus participation at precinct, county, and state conventions. Reeves County Democrat Howard Collier says all voters may present views at all levels. Precinct conventions May 6 at 3 pm with 12 polling places to select delegates for county on May 13 at 10 am in the District Court room.

Employment and unemployment held steady with 5.9 percent jobless rate as earnings rose to 3.59 an hour and 132.83 weekly.
An armed man seized an Eastern Airlines Boeing 727 with 56 aboard at Dulles International Airport and demanded 300000 dollars in ransom. The plane refueled en route from Scranton to Miami, with destinations including Wilkes Barre and Bethlehem. The hijacker reportedly carried a gun and claimed explosives in a briefcase.
The Pecos Band Booster Club meets at 7 30 p m in the high school cafeteria to elect officers for the new year. Everyone interested in the band is invited. membership not limited to band parents.
The Pecos Council on Drug Abuse will hold an introductory meeting at 8 p m Monday at the Community Center 506 S Oak St The session aims to inform attendees about the council s activities and goals The 10 member committee was appointed by the Pecos City Council and invites all interested persons to attend.
Absentee ballots tally 551 by noon as Reeves County voters prepare for Saturday’s primary. Estelle Clinton notes it the largest count she recalls since 1935, with 6 626 registered voters the highest in memory. Poll hours 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and precinct conventions set for 3 p.m. Democrats and 7 p.m. Republicans.
In Kellogg Idaho a rescue team advances toward about 50 missing miners trapped a mile underground in the Sunshine silver mine where a deadly fire has killed 32. Workers set up at the 3160 foot level and may go to 6000 feet if needed as smoke and gas hinder progress after the hoist was shut since Tuesday's flash fire.
