A three year old Pecos boy crippled since birth with foot deformities left Pecos with his mother for the Shrine Hospital in Houston. Doctors hope modern medicine will help him run and play like other boys.
Pecos area Jehovah's Witnesses anticipate a three day circuit assembly in Odessa Friday through Sunday. Dene Lindsey notes the aim to strengthen morale via Bible counsel and assignment for convention duties. Chester Proctor will speak Friday and Sutherland and Schlegel headline Saturday and Sunday sessions. Meetings locally are suspended during the Odessa gathering.
The Pecos City Council denied the zoning request for Buddies Markets Foodway Store at 1800 S Eddy St to sell liquor or permit off premises beer. A separate report notes a life changing medical journey for a Pecos boy, supported by Harold Meyer Cecil Cothrun Shrine Club Connie Gomez and the Shrine Hospital network, with treatment arranged through the Community Council of Reeves County.
A 45 minute cloudburst and flash flood in southern Mexico City killed 20 people and left 15 missing. About 1,600 poorly built homes were destroyed and thousands displaced as mudslides blocked the Mexico City Cuernavaca highway. Mayor Octavio Senties led relief in San Pedro Martir and Xochimilco with shelters opened for night.
Pecos churches hold cottage prayer meetings citywide tonight ahead of the May 14 19 crusade. KIM will broadcast a special prayer lift program at 730 PM to start the sessions. Similar meetings occurred in homes Monday and in churches Wednesday.
In Ohio Humphrey defeats McGovern as 90 percent of precincts report. The result gives Humphrey 38 at large and 38 from eight districts while McGovern has 64 from 13 districts, with possible changes as votes shift. Ohio troubles included locked polling places and ballot issues prompting two federal suits. Tennessee holds its first presidential primary today with Wallace expected to win 49 delegates.
Incumbent Reeves County judge Darrell Glover issues a statement to area voters listing his long time Pecos ties and civic involvement. He argues the office requires business, legal training, and administrative experience and urges voters to back him over Armando Urquidez. He highlights hospital expansion plans and his community roles with church groups, chambers, and veterans organizations.
South Vietnamese paratroopers launched a combat assault eight miles south of Kontum and 19 miles north of Pleiku to clear North Vietnamese from Chu Pa pass on Highway 14. U.S. forces mobilize to replace losses as air strikes hit northern targets and Hue remains a suspected target.
Pecos Cub Scout Dens 1 and 2 and Webelos Den 1 Pack 191 host a bake sale Saturday from 9 30 to 11 30 a m. Three stands will operate at Safeway Wackers Bob s Thriftway and at Third and Oak near Woolworth s. Pies cakes cookies and cupcakes will be sold.
Pecos CableVision will install new higher gain diamond array antennas for Channels 7 and 10 to improve reception. Manager Ron Edwards notes the upgrade mirrors Channel 2 and will replace two antennas on Channel 7 due to previously poor reception.
A group of 20 Toyah Independent School District elementary students will visit Pecos on Friday. The itinerary includes stops at the U.S. Post Office Pecos Museum Dr Pepper Bottling Company and the Pecos Enterprise office with a 1 30 p m arrival. Invitations have been sent to 12 area schools.
A Santa Rosa Catholic Church high school aged choir from a 70 member group will perform at the King's Inn located at Third and Eddy Streets this weekend. Under Gr Pena the youth choir dates back to 1965 and will sing Friday and Saturday nights between 7 30 p m and midnight with members listed by name.
