A bank officer was killed and a police officer and another man wounded during a Southeast Houston bank robbery. James Garris died from a head wound as police pursued three gunmen, who fled in a patrol car. Patrolman Tommy Morris was treated and released. one getaway suspect was wounded in the exchange.
Absentee voting closes Tuesday March 28 for the city election held April 1. Incumbent Dr. E W Schmidt is the only mayoral candidate. City council contenders include Garland Matthews Carl McGee Carl Payne Nell Maddux Karol Curcurato Abel Lees and Joe Morales.
Pecos district schools combine junior high and elementary entries for a two day science fair in Pecos High School cafeteria. Displays set Friday 3:30 to 5 p.m. judged by Julia Ross and Carolyn McNeil. Public viewing Saturday 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. awards at 10:30. cleanup by noon.
Pecos City Council will meet in regular session Thursday at 7 30 a m in the council room at city hall to discuss municipal matters.
The National Commission on Marijuana and Drug Abuse urges repealing jail terms and fines for private marijuana use while keeping penalties for cultivation and sale. It supports de-emphasizing enforcement and uses persuasion over prosecution, noting marijuana is less dangerous than widely believed and presents public safety risks mainly when driving or in chronic, heavy use. The report recommends decriminalization of possession for personal use, with penalties for public smoking and public possession limits, and retains felony penalties for selling or growing. It cautions about long term adolescent use and outlines possible civil penalties or education for other views.
Three AFL-CIO members of President Nixon's Pay Board resigned, saying they could no longer cooperate in a control program they viewed as slanted against workers. They claimed the anti inflation policy gouges the American people.
Reeves County Democratic Executive Committee met in the Commissioners Court Room and drew candidate names for the May 6 Democratic Primary. The committee set precinct conventions for May 6 at 3 p.m. and the county convention for May 13 at 10 a.m. in the District Court Room. Howard Collier announced Manuela Gutierrez as chairman of Election Precinct 1, with Jesse Stephens resigning as Precinct 10 chairman and Barbara Cooper named precinct chairman for the voting box at Pecos Housing Authority Office.
Balmorhea high school students stage a 7 30 p m talent show in the school auditorium. The junior class backs the program which features a one act play directed by Mrs. Amy McIntire and a raffle drawing for an oil painting by Katherine Crenshaw. Proceeds fund senior class trip to Houston. admission is 75 cents adults and 50 cents students.
