Hardin urged to take tougher line or lose gains for farmers

Rep. William J. Scherle accuses Secretary of Agriculture Clifford M. Hardin of being a pushover who fears taking a stand for farmers. If a harder stance or replacement comes, Scherle predicts Republican losses in 1972. Welfare Sit-In Leads to 86 Las Vegas Arrests

About 86 protesters were arrested on misdemeanor charges for disobeying traffic officers during a sit-in on the Las Vegas Strip after a 250-strong demonstration at the Sands Hotel. Bail was posted and no new incidents reported by Sunday.

Ivory-billed woodpecker fades from sight in Washington

The ivory-billed woodpecker, once colorful and rakish, is considered extinct or near extinction after last sighting three years ago. Naturalists, led by Dr. Richard Banks of the U S Fish and Wildlife Service, say any remaining birds would not sustain a viable population.

Pakistan Strike Eases in East Pakistan Confirms New Demands

Sheik Mujibur Rahman today eased the general strike in East Pakistan while tightening control over the provincial government and challenging the army. He ordered ports to function and imports exports to move as well as daily communications between East and West Pakistan to benefit banks. The Awami League leader also called reopening of government factories and payment of wages pensions and foreign airline offices.

Assault Charges Filed After Tavern Fight

Darrell Knight faces aggravated assault charges filed by Patrolmen Joe Mitchell and David Brynes after a Saturday tavern fight. Bobby Sparks sustained a concussion and a nearly severed ear when Knight allegedly struck him with a cue stick. Sparks received treatment at Memorial Hospital and was released.

Drummond Rites Held for George E Drummond

Funeral services were held Saturday at 2 p.m. for George E. Drummond 68 at St Catherine's Catholic Church with burial at Fairview Cemetery. Born October 27 1902 in Pecos he was found dead on the Malcolm Madrera ranch in the New Mexico portion with authorities ruling a personal safety related gunshot wound.

Sapien Rites Held for Timoteo Sapien at Santa Rosa

Final rites were said at 10 this morning at Santa Rosa Catholic Church for Timoteo H. Sapien 74 who died March 12 in Kermit hospital. Surviving are six daughters three sons including Dora Sapien Raymond Sapien and Mrs Magdalena Reyes all of Pecos two brothers and eight grandchildren.

Family loses all belongings in Pecos fire

The William Preston Holdaway family from North Carolina traveling to Arizona to help a sick child lost everything when their station wagon burned after a flat tire. They were sheltered by the Salvation Army in Pecos and donations are requested at the Pecos Police Department, including children's clothing.

Martin Rites Held Yesterday

Funeral services were held in Shreveport Louisiana for Marvin J. Martin 61 brother of Pecos Police Chief Gene Martin. Burial followed in Shelby County Texas. He died Friday night at a veterans hospital after a long illness. A World War II naval veteran he is survived by three brothers and three sisters.
