Congress advances a plan to transform the antipoverty program's legal services into an independent quasi public corporation. The legislation, likened to the Public Broadcasting Corp model, is set for introduction next week with broad bipartisan backing across political lines.

Delores Pollard Johnson, 24, of DeQuincy Louisiana, 8 feet 2 inches tall and weighing 430 pounds, is listed in serious condition after a seven hour brain tumor surgery at Methodist Hospital. Surgeons removed a one inch tumor and the pituitary gland it fed on to prevent threat to her eyesight.
Democratic leaders push a 5 billion SS benefit provision onto a House debt limit bill. The move would accelerate a 10 to 56 percent increase for about 26 million beneficiaries, bypassing White House plans and moving to Senate passage.

The Weather Service posted a tornado watch for a large area of North Central Texas and portions of Northeast and South Central Texas. The alert stated tornadoes could develop from 2:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday with possible severe thunderstorms, large hail, and damaging winds.
The American Legion Richard Briscoe Post invites all members of the Legion and armed forces to a 52nd birthday party at Legion headquarters on South Cedar Monday at 7 30. Commander Frank Kelley will host and invites wives to attend. coffee and sandwiches will be served.
The Reeves County Sheriff’s Posse Barn hosts a teenage dance this Saturday night from 8 to 12 led by Sheriff’s Posse members. The event features music by The Cheyenne Social Club and charges $1.50 per person.
The United States District Court Western Division Pecos will convene Monday at 9 a.m. with Judge Ernest Guinn of El Paso presiding. Criminal and civil cases will be tried. The Pecos Grand Jury will meet to consider presentments by the U.S. Attorney. Judge Guinn will hear arraignments and sentences on pleas.
City Council met yesterday approving bids for the new fire hall. Lydick Roofing Co. won the roof bid at 2150 plus 160 for a 20 year bond, Butts Lathing and Plastering Co. won 2700 for lathing and plaster, Harris Acoustics won 3377 for ceiling floor covering and tile. Also approved February reports and paying 27344.07 in bills. Authorized unmetered mercury vapor street light installations on Country Club Drive cul de sacs and Eddy Pinehurst intersection plus stop signs at Oak and 13th Streets.
Sheriff A B Nail addressed the Pecos Rotary Club at the Holiday Inn urging support for tougher penalties and new laws. He outlined proposals on bail, evidence, wiretapping, sentencing, and prisoner transfer, citing crime trends and costs, and noted his rehab efforts including a barber college. Guests included Wilma Buchanan Ruth Lucas Richard Fernstrom Ray Siegmund.
The Rowdies stretched their winning streak by beating Kermit 6 to 5 in Pecos yesterday afternoon. Johnny Fuentez earned the win with two strikeouts as Mitchell took the loss for Kermit after surrendering three runs and issuing a walk. Pecos drew six walks and will host Jal in a return match this afternoon.
Memorial Hospital Auxiliary seeks inactive candy striper volunteers to return uniforms to Mrs. Wendell Taylor or Mrs. Mike Harrison. Uniforms will be issued to twenty eight new members and remain the property of the hospital group.

A man named George Clene non Sneed was apprehended by law officers in Compton California for the 1968 Grand Prix stolen from Valley Motors on December 24, 1970. Sheriff A B Nails deputy John Lewis filed auto theft burglary charges and the FBI will investigate possible Dyer Act violations.
A passion play depicting the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ will be presented Sunday at Santa Rosa Hall at 4 p.m. Admission is 1 for adults and 25 cents for children. Rev Fr Jesus Quintero directs with Hilberto Davilla as manager and Jose Porr as assistant manager.
The Pecos Rifle & Pistol Club plans a full workday at the range on Saturday to prepare for Sundays TR A Smallbore Rifle Tournament. Free cokes will be offered to volunteers. The event, public with trophies in four classes: Juniors Sub juniors Civilian and Marksman.
West of the Pecos weather looks warm tonight and Saturday with highs of 72 and 84 degrees. Lows range from 30 at higher elevations to 52 elsewhere. The range opens 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. First firing round begins 8:30 a.m.
