Pecos bands win top honors at weekend contests

Pecos musicians earned top prizes at two weekend band competitions. Pecos High School's Eagle Symphonic Band won the Sweepstakes Award at the Sweetwater Band Festival, while both Pecos Junior High and Pecos High competed in UIL Region 6 solo and ensemble at Midland High. Four Pecos juniors and seniors qualified for the Texas State Finals in Austin. Containing injuries were two bus car collision on Hwy 80 near Pecos.

Parents invited to visit Pecos High building project

Texas Public School Week brings Pecos Barstow students and staff into a classroom visit program. Ed Lauderdale, Pecos High School building trades instructor, invites the public to view a three bedroom house under construction at 2001 Wyoming Street. Twenty two students participate in the course, splitting time between classes and construction duties.

Weekend death toll rises to 21 in first March period

The Associated Press reports a grim first weekend of March with 23 fatalities from Friday 5 p m to Sunday midnight. Included were nine traffic deaths, seven homicides, three drownings, and two fire deaths. Many named victims across Texas perished in accidents and violent incidents, from Houston to Dallas, Fort Stockton to Pampa. Local incidents cited include drownings at Buffalo Bayou and a bay tragedy near Copano Bay, with multiple road and gun-related fatalities across counties. The report notes a missing life for a boy in Copano Bay search and ongoing investigations.

El Paso Times to be Sold to Gannett for 20 Million

Gannett Co Inc agrees in principle to acquire the El Paso Times for 20 million in stock. The deal awaits definitive agreement and approvals. Times circulation 62,000 daily and 90,000 Sunday, to join Gannett's Texas and national newspaper group.

Two Florida men arraigned on counterfeit currency charges

Thomas Spiker age 24 and Bills Allan Sawyer age 21, both of Wahneta Florida, were arraigned in U S District Court on possession of counterfeit currency. They were arrested in Balmorhea after a traffic stop and found with two counterfeit 320 bills. Bail was set at 7500 each.
