After 13 years of research scientists say a pesticide could curb the South American fire ant invasion. A mirex and corncob grit mixture sprayed from planes targets infested mounds, which house about 100,000 ants each, with populations dying within weeks of exposure across nine Southern states.
A three state toll road group fights for its own Kansas City to Gulf route, declaring it will close the Ozarks Regional Commission's suggested path and press ahead with its plan.
United States cigarette production increased by 17.4 billion in 1970 to 575 billion. Liggett & Myers, Inc. reported a rise in operating income from cigarettes last year despite a prior sales decline, while manufacturers say demand remains steady amid antismoking campaigns and a government ban on TV and radio ads.
A major snowstorm rolled into the lower Midwest and heavy snow blanketed Kansas, southern Nebraska and Missouri with four inches reported in Hays and Salina. A man in his 60s suspected of killing four people at the SOEDERHAMN magistrates' court this morning was arrested three hours later in a local department store. He surrendered without resistance. A lawyer for the case notes a three year dispute with a woman he formerly lived with, with today’s meeting aimed at a financial settlement.
Sen Adlai Stevenson III assailed President Nixon for poor high level appointments calling George Bush an insult to the World Body and, while noting Bush is decent and intelligent, insists he is unqualified to represent the United States at the United Nations.
California Governor Ronald Reagan, denied a Sacramento legislative joint session, will present his welfare reform plan to business leaders at a Town Hall luncheon in Los Angeles at the Biltmore Hotel. Senate Democrats blocked his Sacramento bid.
The Pecos Eagles finished third in Division II at the Comanche Relays in Ft. Stockton, tying with Kermit for third behind Ector and Monahans. Steve Greenhill placed in high jump and 120 yard hurdles, Pecos relay team placed fourth in the 440-yard relay, and Mike Gordon of Andrews set a new meet record in the 39.9 in the event. The team’s next meet is the Irving Relays in El Paso on March 13.
The Pecos High Queens lost the third round to Seminole in the Pecos High School gym. Seminole won game one 12-9 and the final 15-4, while Pecos edged Seminole 9-1 in the middle contest led by Kim Blackwell. Kathy Wadley and Blackwell starred. Pecos B team won 15-9 before Seminole took the next two 12-10 and 15-7.
Public School Week is being observed in Pecos with schools inviting the public to visit during the week.
Ysidra Gonzales 49 died at Ker mit hospital after a long illness. Funeral tomorrow at 10 in Barstow Catholic Church with burial in Barstow Cemetery. She was born May 14 1921 in Toyah and lived in the Barstow area. Survivors include husband Rodolfo Gonzales seven daughters four sons a sister and fifteen grandchildren.
The Wichita Falls Times editorial supports a higher beer tax to ease state revenue problems. It notes Louisiana and Oklahoma levy higher taxes on beer than Texas and appears in Sunday editions amid weather notes forecasting mild conditions with highs 54 to 78 and lows 28 to 42.
Pecos High School opens baseball with the B team traveling to Monahans to meet the Lobo B squad at 4 p.m. Varsity and a practice game follow in Monahans at 4 p.m. The first home game is Saturday at 1 p.m. against the Loices at home.
Texas Highway Commission awards contracts for major work in the Odessa district under District Engineer Paul H. Coleman. Projects cover Andrews, Ward, Reeves, Martin, Ector, Crane, Winkler, Pecos, Milam, and Upton counties with IH 10 and FM 1216 improvements in Reeves County including a 1.743 mile segment from the Jeff Davis County line to 1.7 miles east and a 0.252 mile stretch on FM 1216 from US 285 to 10.3 miles north.
Gary H. Cowan a Texas Tech student was among 30 pledges initiated into Beta Alpha Psi a national honor fraternity for accounting majors on February 18. He is a Pecos High School graduate son of Homer and Mrs Cowan of Wichita Falls and is married to Dorothy Armstrong of Pecos.
Tuesday school menu features Salisbury steak with scalloped potatoes and buttered spinach. Includes chilled applesauce snickerdoodles hot rolls butter and milk.
City police tied three late night break ins to an 18 year old and two 15 year olds juveniles. They recovered a stolen 1969 Oldsmobile and found liquor, cigarettes and cash taken from Gomez Service Station Pecos Valley Country Club and the Boy Scout hut. Additional thefts from a pickup, a service station, school locker rooms and juke boxes were investigated by Officers McNarlen Cozart Titus and Smith.
The Highways and Transportation Division of the Chamber of Commerce will meet at 8:00 p.m. in the Directors Room. Ben Meek Jr. urges all members and invited officials to attend this important meeting. Attendees include Fred Armstrong Jack Casimir Frank Harper Lynn Owen Carl Holm Police Chief Gene Martin and Local State Highway Engineer Marshall Hoffman.
North Pecos Elementary PTA will meet at 7 30 this evening at the school. A choir from Santa Rosa Catholic Church will perform a special program. All parents and visitors are invited to attend.
Members of Pecos High School's senior class sell tickets for The Diary of Anne Frank to be staged Thursday and Friday. Adults pay 1 dollar and students 75 cents. Marsha Miller stars as Anne Frank in the production drawn from the diary of a young girl hiding from Nazis in World War II Holland.
The Pecos Enterprise announces a format change with local news moved to pages 1 and 2 by order of publisher Orb Rowden. World and national news shift to page 3 as the paper vows to keep local coverage in the foreground.
Duval Corporation at Culberson near Pecos Texas says Field Superintendent J T Burch retires February 28. J W Magraw is promoted to Field Superintendent. Burch joined in 1933 and served in exploration and field roles. Magraw began as a production worker in 1953 and rose to Mine General Foreman before rejoining as Mine Engineer in 1968. Richard Naylor seeks reelection to Pecos Barstow CISD Board in April.
