The town prepares a Fourth of July rodeo and celebration with a lively program arranged by the Legion. Officials urge support from local residents as plans unfold for three days of entertainments and events.
DILL KERR of Pecos elected as district governor for Rotary District 42, attending a conference in Boston with delegates from 68 foreign countries. He notes he is the youngest district governor in Rotary history and that Pecos Rotary has been active for five years. Pecos merchants plan a Trades Day next Monday July 3 coordinated with the Pecos Rodeo. The event aims to lift business during the three day show with extensive advertising and out of town shoppers drawn by special values ahead of rising prices.
Lawrence Westbrook, head of the Texas Relief and Rehabilitation Commission, told Senator Regan by telephone that Red Bluff ranks highly for federal public works funds. He said state oversight will be advisory and Texas cooperation will be essential before any loan is granted, with a decision due after further coordination in Washington.
The program outlines multiple days of entertainment in Pecos with parades, rodeo starts at 2 30 pm, horse races, sports baseball games featuring Hobbs New Mexico against Midland Odessa and Wink, dancing at Daves Hall, a German dance, and a rodeo queen announcement across July 2 3 and 4 with all day bargains and street dancing.
Rodeo manager Carl Eddins reports the largest entry list and crowd expected for a four day event from Sunday through Tuesday the Fourth. The Sunday parade forms at the courthouse at 1:30 PM and moves to Cedar First Oak and Fourth before the school, then on to the rodeo grounds for judging and awards. Henry Slack, survivor of the original 80s rodeo, will attend along with judges Hood Mendel, Howard Collier, and Jeff Vaughn.
Hobbs New Mexico faces Midland on Sunday in the opening game of a three day event tied to the American Legion rodeo. On Monday Hobbs meets Odessa and Wink after the rodeo, with Hobbs urged to receive strong local support as the Pecos town team.
Fast horses are set to race in Pecos Monday and Tuesday as part of the Legion July 4 celebration. Races begin at 10 am each day on the Fort Stockton road track with owners such as Mil Hamilton Pecos Bill Till Fort Stockton Jack Shisler Wink Meryl Jowell Kent Dick Davidson Dan Patterson W M Waters Terlingua Ab Cooksey Mentone and Mrs Louis Roberson with her horse Sugar. Admission is 25 cents.
Twenty two Fort Worth Star-Telegram city delivery boys and two district managers plus the general manager traveled by bus through here on Thursday on their way home from Carlsbad Cavern. They met W. Rh. Lynch, local Star-Telegram delivery man.
J B Sisk of San Antonio visits Pecos relatives including Albert Sisk his brother and T J Sisk his father. He grew up around Pecos and is well known to locals though newer residents may not know him. He reports life in San Antonio is slow but expects a pickup with the new deal.
Balmorhea business leaders organized a Chamber of Commerce with about 50 members. R. Cross was elected president, A. L. Binkley vice president, Pat Moran secretary treasurer. Directors include John Oates and others. The group aims to build a scenic road linking Balmorhea to Madera Canyon and the state Scenic Drive, seeks Jeff Davis support, and plans a forestry camp in Madera Valley, with a delegation traveling to Austin.
The Reeves county commissioners cut the assessed value of cattle from $20 to $15 per head. County Judge J B Woolfolk says the lower rate spurred a much greater rendition, with about 22 000 head now listed versus prior years.
Sheriff Louis Roberson reports two arrests this week of men sought in other towns. One man found with an allegedly stolen Ford coupe was wanted by California authorities. Renther, accused of forgery in El Paso, was captured and handed to El Paso officers.
At a Pecos cotton farmers meeting in the Courthouse on Wednesday, attendees discussed reducing acreage under government option benefit contracts. Local and regional agriculture officials explained plans, with J. W Brooks and others signaling acceptance to plow up cotton. The plan offers cash and option payments ranging from $6 to $20 per acre, based on production, with offers limited to government held cotton and Secretary of Agriculture approval.
The new stand built by WR Lynch is now open for business in the new building between Pecos Furniture Co and M System store. Mr and Mrs Lynch invite friends to visit the shining new stand.
Judge Henry Russell of Pecos was elected alternate delegate to the National American Legion convention at the 5th division gathering in Odessa with 300 plus West Texas legionnaires present. Russell won by an overwhelming vote with strong 16th district support. Pecos representatives included W. R. Cook and others. M. J. Benafield of Brady named next division commander. venue for next year’s meeting not yet chosen.
Mr and Mrs Dewey Winstead and Mr Winstead s father Mr and Mrs R W Neilson and relatives and H W Haynie and family spent last Sunday at Fort Davis They clubbed with the Marfa archery club for an archery contest.
The nineteen Boy Scouts in new uniforms joined an inter city Lions Club event in Alpine this week. They traveled by Jim Deakins truck, enjoyed a city pool swim, toured Sul Ross College and its Museum, and had a barbecue at Cocoa Nut Grove. A night program featured a first aid Scout craft demonstration. Lions from across the region attended.
County Judge A B Woolfolk received from Governor Ferguson an election order for a state election in Pecos. The ballot includes constitutional amendments and a $20,000,000 public works bond issue and a change to allow 3.2 beer sales. Voting will be at the courthouse.
Sisk's Dry Goods Co. launches a mid-summer July Clearance sale starting Saturday. The store promises a parade of values and notable advertisements highlight a broad array of real wages.
Clyde Simmons, county commissioner, shot and killed a large mad dog that attacked trees and shrubbery but reportedly did not bite people. He warned parents and children to keep pets close as heat waves bring more danger to infants.
Four more special prizes were announced for the Rodeo by the chairman in addition to those listed inside. A summer season ticket to the Boulder swimming pool goes to the most graceful boy or girl rider. Two linen tam prizes go to the two girls in matched calf roping. Leader Grocery Co provides a girth for the team with best time in team tying on opening day. G C McKinnis offers six free adjustments for the cowboy bucked off highest and hardest on July 4.
George Arliss, a leading stage and screen figure, stars in The Working Man at the Grand Theatre Sun Man. Warner Bros presents this entertaining comedy drama in which Arliss reprises a familiar screen persona. The Working Man follows a pattern similar to The Millionaire though with a different plot.
Primo Carnera, the giant Italian, knocked out Jack Sharkey in the sixth of a scheduled 15 round bout. Sharkey had led early but Carnera landed a decisive haymaker to end the fight.
