A.D. Dunlap of the state board of water engineers claims bones found near Somer Peak prove camels inhabited the Davis mountains long before modern settlers. He misidentified them as mastodon bones until Washington authorities confirmed they are ancient camel remains.

Senator Regan told Rotarians at the Orient Hotel that the $24 million emergency highway funds could surface several upgrades in Texas. The Finley backed projects include blacktopping Pecos Saragosa road surfacing Fort Stockton highway and completing 14 miles of the Carlsbad highway while addressing a dangerous curve near Davis Mountain. He urged Pecos to push to become the Gateway to the Scenic Drive and to seek a 19 mile link from Old Spanish Trail via Madera Canyon to the Scenic Drive, boosting tourism and road connections through Pecos.
Isora DeRacey Reeves county deputy sheriff, famed roper and rider, was elected Queen of the Pecos Rodeo on opening day amid strong support from cowboys. She also competed in horse and cowgirl races and rope events, including a 132 second calf roping on July 4.
The Animal Husbandry Department is installed at Sul Ross State Teachers College to study sheep cattle and goat industry under local climate feed season and disease conditions. The course begins in the fall term funded by a special legislature appropriation.
Moris W. Collie was appointed Acting Postmaster by James A. Farley to succeed Charles A. Young. Collie took charge on July 1 and said the post office has lots of work but is a great life.
R. R. Collins of Zephyr Texas, 34, was electrocuted last Thursday between Grandfalls and Fort Stockton when a high tension line struck the metal tank on his truck as two men attempted to prop the line. Collins jumped from the vehicle and died as a ground circuit formed. The body was sent to Zephyr for burial. The accident prompted warnings to truck drivers about passing under high lines. Also reported is the rodeo at Fort Stockton highway with multiple horse racing results led by Dave Pool of Girvin and frequent top finishers from Pecos and Fort Stockton.
W T Till Envy of All Cowboys captured the $175 saddle prize at the rodeo. The saddle, crafted by Myers Saddle Co. of El Paso, drew wide admiration from cowboys. Odie Miller of Pecos won a Navajo saddle blanket as second prize, while J O Miller of Barstow received silver mounted spurs. Mrs Otis Jarman of Mentone won the dress at the street dance last night.
Jack May dry goods manager for Pecos Mercantile Co. will be away a week on vacation. He left Friday for Clovis and other New Mexico points.
Miss Georgia Johnson daughter of Mr and Mrs R W P Johnson won Pecos most beautiful woman at the Fireman's Beauty Revue held at the Grand Theater. Beverly Chambers was named second and received a season ticket. The event featured ushers dancers a solo dance by Jane Edith Prickett and a lively boxing exhibition.
Pecos Lions Club installed new officers during a Wednesday service led by Lion R. H. Blackwell at Brandon coffee shop. Officers named include J. K. Starley as president HH. G. Meyer as vice president Webb Armstrong J. B. Woolfolk as directors R. L. Blackwell as tail twister Wayne Weaver as lion tamer and Jack Parker as secretary.
Mr and Mrs Harry Lee Carpenter of Fort Stockton announce the birth of a son named Harry Thomson at the Camp Sanitarium. Both mother and child are reported doing splendidly.
Carrasco a tenant farmer on the J. W. Williams farm in Saragosa died instantly last Friday when struck by a bolt during field work. A thunderstorm rolled in from the mountains as he and a helper operated a grabbing hoe. he had no time to take cover. He was regarded by his employer as dependable and efficient and was buried at Saragosa.
District Governor Bill Kerr of Pecos tells Pecos Rotary Club about the International Rotary convention in Boston with 1500 Rotarians from many countries. He describes attending the International Assembly in Maine for leadership training, meetings with leaders from Japan and China, and visits to the World’s Fair in Chicago.
The 1935 Pecos Rodeo celebrated the 50th anniversary of the world’s first rodeo with a three day event drawing an estimated 5 000 to 8 000 spectators. Cowboys and cowgirls paraded through Pecos while town festivities, dances, and scored competitions showcased western flair and a strong out of town attendance. Carl M. Eddins, General Rodeo.
Reeves county cattleman John Camp took office July 1 as deputy marshal for the U S court in the West Texas Wecos division. Appointed by Guy MacNamara of Waco, Camp succeeds EB G Doty whose term expired after years of efficient service. Camp is well liked and his success is anticipated.
A middle aged couple from the East stayed at the Pecos Tourist Court. W. W. Rossman found a strong box in their room containing $2250 in cash. He reunited the box with the couple, who seemed relieved as no money was missing.
