Editor C. E. Kelley notes a old belief that killing a shake and placing it on its back will bring rain in three days. He says the myth has wiped out snakes in Martin county. A sixfooter rattler was shot in Pecos near Jesse McKee’s home. Dr. O. J. Bryan found a shaking snake in his garage.
The American Legion announces a series of dances during the rodeo starting Saturday night July 1. The University Troubadours will perform as the first act, followed by additional evenings through Monday and Tuesday, with a later postmidnight dance Sunday.
Mrs. W. R. Rhodes and Burl Holloway returned home with Mr. and Mrs. L. H. Rhodes and Mrs. R. B. Adams for a visit, sharing time with relatives and hosting plans.
W Collie a longtime Pecos resident and Democratic leader was appointed Acting Postmaster for Pecos following Charles A Young's resignation. The civil service exam will determine a full four year term. Collie is noted for civic work and Rotary leadership.
A. H. Dunlap proposed using Toyah Lake as a permanent recreational site developed by a government work camp and run by the state park board. The plan includes damming Toyah Lake, stocking fish, planting trees, building cabins, and financing maintenance through concession fees.
Dudley Yard, district director of the West Texas Chamber of Commerce, and H. P. Davis of Pecos Chamber traveled to Stamford earlier this week to consult with West Texas leaders about the Red Bluff project. They secured a pledge from I. A. Bandeen, manager of the Chamber, that all possible assistance would be given to Pecos’ application.
Eyewitness accounts of the Century of Progress expo in Chicago reached Pecos this week. Narrators Marx Stool and family, with Paul W. Morrison, praised the exhibits after returning from the trip. The Stools drove by car while Morrison rode the All-West Texas special from Abilene. Many Pecos residents plan to visit during the fair’s five month run.
Congratulations to Mr and Mrs Orval Braseul of Mentone on the arrival yesterday at a local hospital of a fine 1 2 pound baby girl. Mrs Braseul was formerly Miss Axtline Stephens of Pecos.
In Loving County new Bill Little No 1 Regan and McElwain well marks first big push in months with 1650 feet from west line and 220 from south line of section 92. Other crews report 4300 feet contract depth and progress on multiple wells in Ward County oil field with 300 barrel daily production cited at one unit.
Former Waco police chief Guy McNamara, now U S marshal for the western district of the Texas court, spent Saturday and Sunday in Pecos meeting locals and studying the Pecos division. He impressed residents with his personality and recognized ability, and a successful term is anticipated.
Tri Vy Angle Camp owner Ys Rossman heard signs being torn from a highway and followed a car with a large trailer to Barstow. He reported the vehicle to county officials who traced it to Pyote where lumber stolen from the Armstrong road camp was recovered. The car owners were taken into custody and one held a prior prison record.
Pecos Lions club members will accompany the Pecos Scout troop to Alpine for a Lion inter city gathering next Tuesday. Lions decided at Wednesday’s Brandon coffee shop meeting to buy new uniforms for the boys and to showcase the troop at Alpine. The Lions will have no meeting here next week. Judge J E Starley spoke on future plans for Pecos with optimism, and Judge JM Boogher of Grandfalls praised Starley’s work on the Red Bluff project.
Dr. Jim Camp, chairman of the Chamber of Commerce committee, announced that overtures have been made to the highway department to blacktop the Pecos Saragosa highway. He said prospects for favorable consideration look good, though no action is guaranteed. Also noted were updates on the Red Bluff movement and a call to begin agitation for a new courthouse.
Asphalt paving is complete on about eight to nine miles of the first Carlsbad road section but a shortage of asphalt delays work. When supply arrives, finishing the first section will proceed quickly, marking the last step before it opens to travel.
Wes Hants of Pecos reports merchants plan unusual bargains on Monday July 3 as part of the great American Legion Rodeo. The Chamber of Commerce sets the date to attract more visitors and boost trade with joint efforts from rodeo organizers and local shops. Special prices and ads are to be posted to make Trades Day a standout event.
Miss Mabel Crum, listed as a candidate for Rodeo Queen, denies withdrawal rumors and remains a strong contender. She is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Tom Crum, a prominent ranching family in the area.
Judge J A Crane will convene a special term of court this summer due to the absence of District Attorney Bill Kerr. No grand jury will be summoned next week. the jury will be called upon Kerr's return.
Distinct seizure from an El Paso truck led Sheriff Louis Roberson to destroy over a thousand bottles of beer and several dozen pints of liquor after court order. A jail trusty carried out the demolition while a few bottles were kept as evidence.
The rodeo committee explains voting for the Rodeo Queen on July 2. Attendees vote by writing their choice on the back of their admission ticket, which becomes the ballot. Candidates are Alice Till, Fort Stockton. Mabel Crum, Pecos. and Isora DeRacey, Pecos. last year's queen was Anne Evelyn Roberson.
The West Texas Refining Company’s Pecos plant restarted crude runs after nearly six months of shutdown. Over twenty employees and their families moved back to Pecos, boosting local business and lifting the town’s mood as smoke and lights returned to the refinery and work resumed under superintendent Mr. Atchison with plans for John J. Thomas to assist soon.
A temporary city hall has been established at Hotel Brandon in anticipation of the removal of the present city hall building. The move comes once funds from the site sale are received from the federal government. New offices occupy the hotel’s south side and are well furnished and adequate for city needs.
Jim King, Pecos pioneer restaurateur, returns to the lunch counter after months away. He will offer free coffee, hamburgers, and hot dogs Saturday at his new stand in the building completed by W. R. Lynch on Oak Street between the M System grocery and Pecos Furniture Co. King opened Thursday and Lynch runs a news stand in half the building.
Henry I Russell of Pecos aims to be chosen as the Pecos division delegate to the national American Legion convention in Chicago. A large Pecos Legionnaires delegation will attend the Odessa division convention Saturday and Sunday with a full program planned for attendees.
E L Mears prominent Texan died in Austin on Monday this week. He was the brother in law of Mrs J E Eisenwine of Pecos. A photo and story of his achievements ran in Wednesday's Star Telegram.
Pecos volunteer fire department sponsors a beauty contest at the Grand Theater to crown the most beautiful girl in Pecos. Forty to fifty young ladies from local businesses will enter. A large share of the Grand theater receipts will go to the fire department. Date to be announced.
