A humorous regional tale from Mrs. Charles Johnson notes Horace’s misadventure after a farmer’s misused horn and turpentine, blasting through a barn, chased by dogs, and ending when the bridge toller misreads the horn signals as a boat approach, Horace drowned and the hounds swim free.
The Supreme Court held 5 to 4 that capital punishment as practiced in the United States violates the Eighth Amendment. It leaves open a possible future reinstatement under narrow circumstances, and immediately removes death sentences from about 600 inmates. Justices Douglas Brennan Marshall lead the majority. Burger Blackmun Powell Rehnquist dissented.
President Nixon may announce a further 10 000 troop withdrawal around his re election bid with US forces in Vietnam dropping toward 39 000 by September 1. Draftees will be used only if they volunteer, while a minimal advisory force may remain. The White House signaled another pullout before Labor Day as regional troop levels shift.
Senator Edward M Kennedy opened a hearing to examine how the Justice Department is handling the Supreme Court ruling that declared warrantless domestic wiretapping of subversives unconstitutional. Mrs. Miriam Starley wife of 143rd District Court Judge J H Starley and three others were injured in a two car collision at Fifth and Eddy in Pecos early today. Mrs Starley in good condition at Reeves County Memorial Hospital suffered bruises and abrasions. The North Carolina trio received minor injuries and were treated and released. Police said Mrs Barrier from Statesville North Carolina failed to stop at the stop sign. her car struck the Starley vehicle and shoved it about 120 feet into a fence. Officer Charles Smith cited Mrs Barrier for failing to yield at a stop sign.
Heat lashed Pecos with 110 degrees as a cooling trend emerged to 76. Forecasters expect more of the same for rodeo preparations under fair to partly cloudy skies with a slight chance of rain tonight and tomorrow. The Midland Weather Service recorded 82 degrees today while winds came from the southwest. Severe storms with hail to golf ball size battered Abilene and Lubbock, with tornado funnels sighted near San Angelo.

Reeves County Sheriff’s Posse will host a Friday dance from 8 p m to 12 a m at the Posse Barn north of the rodeo grounds off U S Highway 285. Sheriff A B Nail said Easy Adams and his Texas Tophands will provide the music for the pre rodeo event.
