Matilda Geddings Gray, a wealthy philanthropist, died of a heart attack at her Lake Charles home. She was 82 and kept a low profile. Her donations of rice crops from her estate earned England's Order of the British Empire and France's Legion of Honor, both in 1950, along with Guatemala's Order of the Quetzal.
In Key Biscayne Florida experts warned that U S aviation will grow for a decade, with passenger traffic forecast to triple by 1981. The challenge includes noise pollution safety and air congestion as FAA and AIA A AIAA sponsor a three day meeting on the future of U S air transport.
A mysterious wildlife plague spreads from Lake Apopka into seven miles of algae choked canals toward Lake Dora killing thousands of fish and dozens of birds. Sixteen alligators have died and wardens report carcasses of egrets crows and seagulls along with shad and catfish kills. The outbreak began a month ago and edges northward through the region.
Scientists at Stanford Linear Accelerator Center reveal discovery of new subatomic particles they name partons. The team led by Dr. Wolfgang K H Panofsky and Dr. Henry W Kendall announces findings in Scientific American and on Tuesday in Stanfords campus center.
In Yuba City California a skid row mission superintendent and the Rev C W Renwick mourn mass murder victims found stabbed and hacked to death in orchard graves near town. They were workers who frequented the mission to shave shower and dress for work and resented being called bums. They loved life and were not discouraged.
Wet weather spread across the nation after a string of tornadoes hit the western Gulf Coast region Tuesday. Minor damage occurred with no injuries. Funnel clouds toppled mobile homes north of Plainview Texas, and twisters were seen near multiple points in the Texas Panhandle, plus near Monroe Louisiana and Baldwyn Mississippi, with brief touchdowns near Aberdeen South Dakota and Altus Oklahoma.
Prime Minister Golda Meir said Israel would reopen the Suez Canal only on unchanged terms, rejecting water-line concessions and staged withdrawals. President Anwar Sadat also remained inflexible, insisting Egyptian and possibly Soviet forces cannot cross the canal as a first step toward territorial withdrawal.

A rear end collision between a Greyhound bus and a truck trailer on SH 20 near Pecos in the pre-dawn hours left one woman dead and eighteen injured. The victim, Mrs. Tommie M. Bouldin of Brenham, died at the scene from internal injuries. Among the injured were bus driver Berlin G Whitlock and truck driver Aron Goolsby, with several passengers treated and released at Memorial Hospital.
Funeral Mass for Consuelo H. Nunez 45 will be said at 10 a.m. Friday at Christ the King Catholic Church Borgado with burial in Saragosa Cemetery. She died suddenly last night at her home in Saragosa. Born February 17 1926 in Candelaria Texas she moved to the area from Marfa in 1952. Surviving are her husband Balois Nunez eight sons including Balois Jr Samuel Oscar Fidel Manuel Israel Ernest and Jamie three daughters Juanita Nuez Ela Silvas and Lupe Corne las two grandchildren three brothers Alejandro Hignojos Angel Hignojos Pedro Hignojos and two sisters Maria Montez Angelita Fuentez.
Mrs. Jerry Wood asks Betty Crocker-General Foods coupons in response to a Texas Methodist plea to help Carl Van Sickle a Houston man needing a kidney machine to stay alive. The machine is promised in exchange for 600,000 coupons from General Mills Betty Crocker products. Mrs. Van Sickle and local church members appeal for support. Also noted are the transfer of Edmund Mertes 65 to Nebraska. he died at Pecos Nursing Home with no local relatives.
Sylvia Esparza and Wilinda Mosby announce the Pecos Future Homemakers of America Chapter sale of Favorites from Home Economics Teachers. The $3.50 edition funds six delegates to the Leadership Workshop with copies available at Pecos High School or through FHA members.
Five of the eight members of the Big Spring City Commission asked Chief of Police Jay Banks to resign on Tuesday. Banks, 60, a former Texas Ranger captain, refused the request. He has led the Big Spring police department for 11 years.
Clubs organizations and businesses are urged to enter a float for the June 30 Rodeo Parade. Contact Mrs. Tommy Peer or Mrs. Carl Herring to register and arrange vehicle or horse drawn entries. Parade divisions include commercial and organizational categories to ensure a smooth event.
Washington AP reports Sen John Tower R Tex and Lloyd Bentsen D Tex opposed an amendment to boost military pay by about 2.7 billion yearly. The measure failed to pass 51 to 23 on a roll call vote.

Anne Slack daughter of Mr and Mrs Dick Slack will compete as the Business and Professional Women’s Club entrant in the Golden Girl of the Old West pageant on June 28. A Pecos High School senior she is related to Henry Slack a participant in Pecos 1883’s World’s First Rodeo. She is a 16 year old band Sweetheart nominee and majorette with extensive activity in FTA Latin Club and more, plus Girl Scouts and youth fellowship work. Her escort will be Roy Stokes.
