Moscow announced a draft moon exploration and use treaty and asked UN Secretary General U Thant to place the proposal on the General Assembly agenda for the fall session. Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko conveyed the request to Thant via Tass.
Mexico City President Luis Echeverria told 900 editors at the Freedom of the Press banquet that press freedom must reach all social groups not just elite circles. He said freedom guarantees expression of all currents of thought and urged media to serve those whose interests are most at risk.
Rain and humid conditions blanket the nation as severe thunderstorms sweep the Midwest. Funnel clouds appear in Kansas to Indiana but do not touch down. Gusts reach 60 mph in Chanute Kansas and large hail hits Adrian Missouri southeast of Kansas City.
House Agriculture Committee Chairman W. R. Poage denounces President Nixon's proposal to abolish the Agriculture Department and shift its duties to new agencies. He vows opposition to any consolidation that cuts a Cabinet post for American agriculture and its farm and rural constituencies.
The Supreme Court ruled Texas new law allowing license suspension without a hearing unconstitutional in a unanimous decision. Antonio R. Gaytan of San Antonio appealed a lower court ruling, as the court also struck down the Texas Safety Responsibility Act. Gaytan was involved in an auto collision on January 1, 1958, where the other driver faced charges of speeding negligence and driving without a license.
A New Orleans judge directs three physicians to determine if a bullet can be removed from Kirksey McCord Nix, 28, awaiting trial for the Easter Sunday murder of grocer Frank Corso. Nix, son of a Tulsa judge, is among four held in Orleans Parish jail on the charges.
First Lt Christopher Schiess of Salem Oregon, sole survivor of a collision between a Marine F4 Phantom and a Hughes Air West DC9, said the airliner hit the military jet after impact and he parachuted out after the crash. He described tumbling violently four or five times but gave few details at a news conference.
Three black American soldiers face attempted murder charges after grenade attacks at Camp Humphreys near Seoul. An American and three Koreans were injured May 22 23 as racial tensions at the camp surfaced.
The Supreme Court narrows private damages for news reports by requiring proof of actual malice or calculated falsehoods. Five justices agree to bar a $275,000 award to a former nudist magazine distributor over WIP coverage of police obscenity raids.
The Pecos Volunteer Fire Dept asks residents to identify elderly or ill neighbors living alone so fire crews can map homes and floor plans. They will start contacting these people Thursday night and ask them to mail back a form to City Hall. The aim is to save lives by ensuring rapid egress in a fire.
The Texas Supreme Court upheld multi member house districts in a 5 3 ruling. Leaders praised the decision while critics warned urban residents would lose representation. The plan keeps Dallas and Harris County districts at large with multiple members and splits Midland County, and Gov. Smith declined to comment.
Arrangements are pending at Pecos Funeral Home for services for Edmund Mertes who died this morning at Pecos Nursing Home at 3 30. Other details were not available at press time.

Michael Brombach 17 and Stephen Dodd 19 were jailed in Reeves County on theft and marijuana charges after a downtown Pecos mugging sparked a wild pursuit. Brombach fought pursuers and dropped a purse billfold, while Dodd’s car contained an ounce of marijuana.
In Pecos residents rose to the occasion when a purse was stolen in the downtown area. Citizens chased the thief and helped police by detaining him and confronting accomplices. The Enterprise applauds the brave townfolk and the young volunteers led by Don Howard for the weekend clean up efforts.
The world’s largest mobile wax museum, Robinson's Wax Museum, sponsored by the Downtown Lions Club, features 23 life size figures of figures like Lincoln and Kennedy. It runs through Saturday, June 12, at Oak and 3rd, with 50 cent adult, 25 cent child admission and free entry under six with a parent.
Army Specialist Four Jimmy A. Tarin, 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. Santiago Tarin of Pecos, was assigned to the 1st Infantry Division at Fort Riley Kansas. A rifleman in Company B, 20 Battalion of the division's 16th Infantry, he holds the Army Commendation Medal, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star Medal. He was last stationed in Vietnam.
The grand jury met last Friday and returned two felony indictments. One charges assault with intent to murder against Filberto Gonzales Ulate, 22, held in Reeves County Jail on $5,600 bond. The second indictment for rape has a withheld name pending arrest.
There are no new leads in the disappearance of Sam Fitzhugh who has been missing since Sunday morning after 7. His wife told police he woke her at 7 to get the children ready for a Midland search. He was last seen at a service station near 8th and Eddy and has not been seen since driving a 1971 LeSabre with license DDF 627. He is 6-2, 230 pounds with brown hair hazel eyes and wore a white shirt green slacks and black shoes.
Diann Tapp, daughter of Mr and Mrs Paul Tapp, seeks Golden Girl of the Old West honors for Tri K Klub at the Rotary Rodeo Revue on June 28. A Pecos High School senior, she moved to Pecos in 1963, cheered in junior high, and became a choir officer. She led 4-H as president for three years and served on the 4-H County Council. She was Gold Star Girl in 1969, placed third in District 6 lamb feeding, and has exhibited lambs locally and in El Paso and Houston. She is an officer in The Klub and a member of First United Methodist Church.
