A bonfire chase in Pecos was staged by the Pecos Volunteer Fire Department for training and to hand out circulars to onlookers. The stunt endangered spectators and firemen, and officials warn the dangerous rush to fires must be curbed to prevent serious injury.
A Pecos area citizens circular mocks fire safety orders with sarcastic tips about driving to fires and hindering hoses. The piece mocks emergency responders while urging support for a Pecos river watershed survey, noting a $400,000 federal funded project with $30,000 requests from Texas and New Mexico. Pete Reed about 30, of Carlsbad, drowned while fishing alone at Red Bluff reservoir Tuesday afternoon. His empty boat, life preserver and hat were found, and a search party recovered his body about noon Wednesday near the boat site. Reed, employed at Pasotex Pipeline, is survived by his wife, parents, and two children. This is the second drowning at Red Bluff since its opening.
The Red Bluff Water Power Control District seeks an injunction against Fritz Estill of Kermit to stop trespassing on district property without permission or payment of a daily fee. Hearing set for 2 p.m. Thursday the 15th in district court with Judge J. A. Crane presiding. Hill D. Hudson represents the plaintiff and Judge A. T. Folsom defends for Estill.
The Pecos Lions Club met at a luncheon and elected part of its officer slate for the year. Final president and three vice presidents to be chosen next week from Buddy Withers George Nagel Rev Oliver Harrison Dr Byron Lackey R Henry Blackwell and Vestel Lott. Jock Parker reelected secretary Horace Heath named lion tamer Jim Durnal tail twister. Pop Biggs Guy Walker Buck Jackson named directors with Norman Eisenwine and Jimmy Yancy tied for fourth post run off next meeting.
The Pecos school board hires Mrs. Jane F. Doty for high school commercial teaching and Miss Pauline Jones for first grade. Doty trained at Sul Ross State Teachers College and replaces Elizabeth Hendricks who left for Odessa. Jones previously taught in the Mexican and primary departments and studied at Texas Tech. The board also transfers Eston Morton from the Mexican school to language arts in second grade or junior high. A man will be hired as Mexican school principal and Saragosa school bus driver, who will live in Saragosa.
American Legionnaires ex service men KP lodge members and civic groups join a 4 pm parade through Pecos to kick off Flag Week approved by Mayor Toliver for June 5 to 10. Legionnaires urged wear of flags and caps and rally at the Chamber of Commerce. A patriotic speech by Hill D. Hudson will follow.
The Pecos Chamber of Commerce will meet next Tuesday at 12 15 at the Brandon Coffee Shop. Secretary manager Capt M L Swinehart said the lunch and meeting are the only June gathering. The chamber recently voted to switch to monthly meetings on the second Tuesday.
The Pecos school board authorized loan of chairs and flood lights to the Rodeo Association for the tenth annual July Fourth rodeo and celebration. Chairs will be used in box seats and flood lights will illuminate night shows. A committee from the American Legion met with the board to request the loan.
Pecos high school bands earned six awards this week including three sun gold loving cups for first division ratings at Odessa state regional contests and one second division cup. The senior band won first in marching and playing, the junior high first in marching and second in playing. Two plaques from the national regional contests in Abilene honored first division in marching and second division.
A Winkler County group visited Pecos on Wednesday promoting the Kermit Rodeo set for June 16 17 and 18. The Kermit High School band joined the boosters as they broadcast music and talks on KIM inviting Pecos residents to attend.
Prominent El Paso figure C G Durrill is still seriously ill and under an oxygen tent after several weeks of illness. His wife, the former Myrt le Ruhlen of Pecos, is mentioned.
The Pecos Rodeo and Celebration to be held July 3 and 4 drew renewed interest this week as the committee readies for more than a hundred contestants. International contenders from Fort Worth and Houston are fielding inquiries, with Kermit and Big Spring rodeos this month aiding contestant recruitment. Cowgirls may compete for prizes totaling 2500, with plans for a possible Sunday roping showcase. Buck Jackson, Tad Lucas, and Loraine Jackson are negotiating appearances, while a grandstand expansion to 2500 seats and upgraded facilities promise ample spectator comfort. Miss Margaret Duncan of Fort Davis is the reigning Pecos Rodeo queen.
Preparations were made to plug the Far West Reyes county oil test north of Toyah after no showing when the H. F. Anthony No. 1 Richard Shaw well was shot. Initial shots bridged up 125 feet and a second shot extended from 16 to 1644 feet. About 200 feet of oil was in the hole but tubing failed to show, the well was plugged to 1650 feet and cemented, but bailing produced no showing and abandonment was decided. Gas pressure remained about the same per Anthony.
Willie May and Berta Faye Moore, daughters of Denny Moore, were guests of the Pecos Rotary Club at Thursday luncheon. The event featured local community members as attendees and highlighted Rotary activities in Pecos.
Notices sent to city property owners with increased valuations. Tax hearing at city hall Friday June 16 to protest the increases. Mayor Toliver states only a few increases were adopted this year. no notices for decreases or unchanged valuations were sent.
Mr and Mrs Clarence Bell departed last weekend for a vacation across eastern and western United States. They will visit Poughkeepsie New York for a Vassar College class reunion and the New York World's Fair before continuing to California. Mr Bell will return to Pecos in a few weeks while Mrs Bell stays in California for the summer with her mother.
Pecos High School band and three Pecos girls head to Fort Stockton for Water Carnival events. The band travels by bus and cars, about 60 students, sponsored by the Pecos Chamber of Commerce and The Pecos Enterprise. The revue finale offers a World's Fair trip prize.
Henry Mound of X-ranch suffered minor injuries Thursday morning in a solo accident between Kent and the Davis Mountain filling station. His car overturned and skidded along the highway. He was cut on the head and taken by ambulance to Pecos hospital for treatment.
Mr and Mrs W E Crosby of Kermit announce the birth of a daughter in a Pecos hospital on Wednesday.
Vance Brown of Big Spring and Earl West of Silver City are charged in Colorado City with stealing cattle using a pickup. Investigators say the thefts occurred in Ward Reagan Irion Mitchell and Howard counties. Thornton identified two head of cattle stolen from his ranch. an Abilene detective had bought them at auction.
Dr C J Magee longtime Pecos dentist and pioneer resident suffered serious injuries after a fall in his bathtub. He broke a collar bone and sustained chest and head injuries and was to be moved from a Pecos sanitarium to Chicago for several months of treatment.
A fire at the Taylor Black Pharmacy in Barstow caused several thousand dollars in damage Tuesday night. The rear of the building burned and smoke damaged merchandise and fixtures. Pecos fire crews assisted after Barstow volunteers contained the blaze around midnight. Loss was partially covered by insurance.
