Democratic and Republican primary run-offs are set for Saturday across Reeves County with Democks voting at familiar May 6 sites in Orla Toyah Saragosa Balmorhea and Pecos from 8 p.m. to 7 p.m. Republicans vote at a single polling place 1307 Johnson St. In Precinct 3 the Dem run-off features Balmorea Saragosa and Pecos Housing Authority area electors. Dem candidates Barefoot Sanders and Ralph Yarborough vie for the US Senate, Frances Farenthold faces Dolph Briscoe for governor, Bill Hobby and Wayne Connally contest lieutenant governor, James Wilson and Robert Calvert run for comptroller. The lone GOP run-off is Albert Fay vs Hank Grover for the governor nomination. Absentee ballots total 134.

Tornado strikes Padre Island injuring woman near Corpus Christi
A tornado skimmed Upper Padre Island near Corpus Christi injuring a 32-year-old woman in a trailer. The funnel produced a waterspout 18 miles southeast of the city, prompting a 7 am warning for Nueces San Patricio and Arkansas counties and prompting reports of two wrecked trailers and a beach concession stand tent. The storm rattled the coast with showers and thunderstorms, while temperatures ranged 59 to 74 degrees.

A Reeves County gas well blew out of control early Wednesday and was brought under control Thursday afternoon. Under Red Adair Co. supervision, crews pumped thousands of gallons of weighted mud to seal the well. The No. 1 B,E. Quinn well was venting 18 to 20 million cubic feet daily, source said. Cleanup and sealing of Ellenburger levels followed.

About 200 people attended a meeting at Santa Rosa Hall initiated by the United Mexican American Council to discuss the Pecos Barstow Consolidated Independent School District board of education plan not to renew East Pecos Junior High band director Darrell Carrs teaching contract. Carr charged lack of music credentials and claimed the board has ignored input from band staff. A petition calling for Carrs rehiring had 179 names by 16 a.m. and will be presented at the next board meeting.
