Senate leaders seek to curb debate on the draft extension bill unless voluntary time limits are reached. A petition for a talk curb is circulating and could be filed Friday after votes on ending the draft and limiting extension to one year. If filed, a Tuesday vote would decide limiting debate on the rest of the bill and pending amendments.
The AP reports a joint effort to help draftees apply civilian skills to military life. By August induction notices will include a pamphlet outlining Army life, a first for using the draft system as guidance. An initial six month supply of civilian employment training information labels will be mailed to state draft headquarters to attach to each induction notice.
Powerful thunderstorms with high winds return to Enid for a second time this month tumbling mobile homes knocking down trees and snapping power lines. Northern Oklahoma also sees powerful gusts with Stillwater reporting 100 mph winds but no major damage. Police said most of the storm tracked north of the city.
The U S Command announced 48 American battle deaths in the weekly casualty summary, the highest in four weeks. The total covers most of 30 U S soldiers killed May 21 in three North Vietnamese shelling attacks on bases in the north, including the Fire Base Charlie 2 strike that killed 29 and wounded 33.
Sheriff Roy D. Whiteaker says more slain transients and farm workers lie buried in concealed graves in orchards north of Yuba City. Crews plan to dig at a site flooded recently as weather cleared. Twenty three bodies had been found by then. Juan Corona, 37, a farm labor contractor, was arraigned on ten counts of murder.
Roanoke Virginia AP report says the pilot of the plane that killed Audie Murphy and five others may be the same man linked to a fatal Piper PA23 crash near Lufkin Texas last year. The NTSB has not issued a report, but a slightly injured pilot told investigators both engines failed from fuel exhaustion. The pilot is Herman Lavelle Butler, 43, of El Paso Texas, who was flying from New Orleans to El Paso on March 14, 1970.
West Bengal health chief Dr. Hiralal Saha reports more than 1000 East Pakistani refugees have died in a cholera outbreak near Calcutta. He cites hospital records as the basis for the figure and notes many deaths among refugees in camps or roadside shelters went unreported.
The Washington Evening Star reports Attorney General John N. Mitchell would quit to run President Nixon's 1972 campaign. It cites Deputy AG Richard G. Kleindienst or LEAA head Jerris Leonard as possible successors. White House and Justice Department deny the story.
Sparkman Zaragosa and Elfida Zaragosa named Best All Round at East Pecos graduation exercises. 132 eighth graders received diplomas. awards given by school board members and Supt. Ray Whitley as East Pecos principal David Dutchover announced top honors, including highest average to Aida Anaya.
A list of individuals sentenced or arraigned before U S Magistrate J M Preston for illegal entry or transporting aliens. The sentences range from three months to six months with fines and bonds. one defendant is released on a PR bond to return to Arkansas for a Selective Service Act violation.
Meredith Ayers daughter of Dr and Mrs I G Sunday has earned a Dean's List citation for Sul Ross State University spring semester. She is a 1968 Pecos High School graduate and a Presidential scholar with a 3.6 average, majoring in elementary education and expected to graduate in May 1972 after summer study.
The Pecos office of Universal C I T Credit Corp adopts the name CIT Financial Services along with 750 offices nationwide. Manager A G Hernandez says the rebrand reflects its broad consumer and business finance offerings and long term community commitment.
Tennis lessons offered to children and adults start Monday June 7 at the high school courts. Instructor Kim Sales, niece of Mr. and Mrs. Garvin Passmore, a El Paso school system teacher, will lead morning and afternoon sessions. For information call 445-3893.
The Associated Press reports black storms across Texas Panhandle and West Texas with a tornado sighting five miles south of Pyote that dissipated before touching ground. Dust storms soared, hail larger than golf balls fell near Dumas, and temperatures reached 104 in Cotulla and 101 in Laredo as forecasts warned of another severe weather round.
West of the Pecos reports partly cloudy and warm conditions with a few thundershowers mainly tonight. High Friday ranges 90 to 105 with a low tonight 56 to 72. Yesterday evening Pecos received 0.16 inch of rain and hail causing minor damages.
