Philadelphia superintendent Mark Shedd announced cuts to the school system saving 20 million dollars annually by eliminating 2000 jobs and closing all high school extracurricular activities including drama debate music and intramural sports starting with the 1971 1972 school year amid a 100 million deficit.
Oakley Hunter head of the Federal National Mortgage Association says the interest-rate ceiling for government backed mortgages could be raised if rate pressures persist. He notes the current ceiling is 7 percent and the administration is watching daily to avoid precipitous action.
Severe weather spread across the Great Plains from Montana to the Texas Panhandle. No injuries were reported. Several small tornadoes struck southeast Montana at night, damaging a plane and hangar and cutting power lines near Broadus. Funnel clouds also appeared in South Dakota, northeast Colorado, and southwest Kansas.
Deputy Atty. Gen. Richard G. Kleindiest says critics including the ACLU, press, and Sen. Kennedy helped foster a myth that the government ignored constitutional limits during Washington May Day protests. He argues those who cried foul would find something to complain about regardless of police actions.
In Washington the election reform bill's fate is uncertain as two Senate committees clash over campaign limits. The Rules Committee altered Nixon era provisions by removing a $35,000 per candidate cap and approving an overall ad spending ceiling 4 to 3. The Commerce Committee favored separate limits of five cents per voting age person for radio TV time and for print ads.
Bill Alves, survivor of a mountain expedition that lost four climbers to freezing, plans another ascent of Mt Ritter in the Sierra Nevada near Madera California. He told reporters on Thursday from a Madera hospital he hopes to succeed by Labor Day weekend after two prior failures.
An early morning fire at Arlington Park Race Track in Chicago killed at least 27 horses and caused about 250000 dollars in damage. Twenty one horses, mostly trotters and pacers, were trapped in the blaze and several others had to be euthanized due to injuries.
The US troopship Upshur carrying 13 disabled North Vietnamese prisoners of war turned back toward South Vietnam after Hanoi denied accepting the prisoners. The ship with 10 gunboats had circled off the South Vietnamese coast awaiting instructions as North Vietnam announced Paris that the release agreement was annulled.
Carl Ulsaker a retired West Point officer became Southern Regional Postmaster General as part of a five member overhaul of the Postal Service. Memphis will host the region covering ten states including Tennessee and Texas with aims to decentralize operations and boost mail service.
UT regents expected to decide on a new 10 year charter for Texas Student Publications Inc. The plan moves editor selection to the journalism department dominated board and proposes a $3 mandatory student fee to support The Daily Texan.
Pecos High School home making department offers summer homemaking for students who completed Homemaking I to earn half credit. Most work is at home with no charge. Sessions run June 7 to June 30 with workshops in Parliamentary Procedure, Home Furnishings, Draperies, and Knitting.
