Longtime Reeves County juvenile officer J E Couch retires
J E Couch retires after 14 years as Reeves County first juvenile officer. A Pecos native and Texas Tech agronomy graduate, he returns to his Hickory street home to read and manage about 700 acres of a now 1600 acre family farm. He taught remedial reading and science before his 1958 appointment and plans to visit daughters Christina Stapleton of Haskell and Susann Flowers of Old Glory, Texas.

Two car washes sponsored by Civil Air Patrol planned for Saturday at Milton’s Conoco and Madu x Texaco stations, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each, $2 per car.

East Pecos Junior High School held honors assemblies Tuesday. Eighth graders receiving awards include Irma Calin do for citizenship, Armando Lujan for progress, Kathy Herod for highest honor, Ronnie Jenkins as best all-around boy, and Kathy Herod as best all-around girl. English achievement trophies went to Viola Valdez Arma Galindo Gloria Reyes and Kathy Herod. Hector Fuentes earned the student council essential award. Asencion Machuca and Miss Herod were annual co editors. English certificates went to Mireya Olmos Wayne Cameron Eleazer Chavez and Jesus Uribe. Radio Club president Arturo Rodriguez was recognized. Seventh graders recognized include Rose Mary Meraz for citizenship and Domingo Navarette.

Run-off set for Saturday in Reeves County
The Democratic gubernatorial run-off features Frances Farenthold against Dolph Briscoe with polling places matching the May 6 primary in Orela Toyah Saragosa Balmorhea and Pecos. The Republican run-off has a single polling place at 1367 Johnson St. Jack Boswell, county chairman, announced.

Bates' feed yard firm Pecos Feed Yard Inc. is back in operation in Pecos after a Chapter XI bankruptcy. President Robert W. Bates Jr. says a 10 year SBA guaranteed loan from Bank of A Levy funded a 400000 claim payoff to 80 creditors and supports future operations. The yard, three miles south of Pecos on Balmorhea highway, now accepts cattle and aims for 12 000 head capacity with 15 to 18 workers.
