A rumor of Pretty Boy Floyd near Pecos prompted a scale of sightings and a sheriff investigation. Two armed men with a car full of firearms were said to have stopped for gas, though local authorities cite Oklahoma City detectives as the possible source of the tip.

Funeral services were held Thursday for Mrs. W. BE, sister of Hamilton resident, who died early morning. Acknowledgments and local notices followed. The service occurred at a local cemetery with family in attendance.
Balmorhea Chamber of Commerce secured a 100 foot right of way for a proposed scenic road through Madera Canyon to intersect Scenic Drive. Senator Ken Regan announced at a Chamber luncheon. Pecos Chamber of Commerce and Rotary members pledged support to advance the 20 mile project as part of El Paso highway division efforts. The route would pass near McDonald observatory and bring the Scenic Drive closer to Pecos.
A Monday morning fire at the Cypress street apartment house next to the Prewitts burned the roof and damaged the interior. Estimated loss to building and furniture around 5000 with about 2000 in insurance on the house and 1850 on furniture. Occupants included Dr. C. J. Magee and Dr. J. W. Holder family. origin traced to the Holder kitchen.
A. H. Brunson, Isotex representative from El Paso, was in town this week to discuss business opportunities and potential partnerships.
Sixteen Pecos Boy Scouts left Pecos Tuesday morning for a fifteen day camp at Buffalo Trail near the Nueces River in Edwards County. Accompanied by Leon Pittman Sr and Dick Starley with Bill Welly as chaperone, they will return July 27 or 28.
Pecos cantaloupes are arriving to Pecos stores this weekend or early next week with full supply two weeks away. The melons already delight local tables and strong demand builds as orders pile up for their renowned flavor and texture.
John Camp, a rancher along the river, reports the loss of 14 cattle to rabies amid a rising coyote problem. Sheriff Roberson estimates two calves may also be infected.
A 215 citizen petition was presented to Reeves County Commissioners Court seeking a local option election on 3.2 beer. The court received the petition but postponed action to the August 14 meeting due to Texas law timing. an August 26 election could determine county dry or wet status with precincts retaining separate options. The petition lists voters from Pecos, Toyah, and Balmorhea.
The Pecos Boy Scout troop earned a 100 percent rating in all departments for May and June per the Buffalo Trail Council monthly report. Pecos and Big Spring were the only district troops to achieve 100 percent in June. Dr. J L Kincannon is Scout master and Dick Starley is assistant Scoutmaster.
Lee tires from Conshohocken, a high grade auto tire brand, are now sold wholesale and retail by the Pecos Mercantile Company. The firm also becomes the local supply agent for the state highway department under an exclusive contract with Lee Tire Co. Floyd Brownlee, manager, says full stock in all sizes for passenger and commercial vehicles will be maintained.
A mad coyote attacked W. S. Marshall of Pecos while he walked near his home. Marshall beat it back with a cane, but the animal bit ten and infected his dogs. Sheriff Louis Roberson killed the coyote. Later he attended a rabid dog on the same Monday.
Mrs Hannah M Riggs, age 100, long time Pecos County ranch resident and pioneer, died last Friday at her son Tom Riggs’s ranch. Survived by seven children and numerous grandchildren. Funeral services held Saturday with Rev Guramage officiating at the cemetery. her 100th birthday last February marked a large descendants reunion.
Plans for a three story Pecos federal complex with a basement, tile roof, arched windows, and multiple offices and courtrooms are being prepared under the Public Works program. Wyatt Hedrick of Fort Worth drew the designs. bids may be issued by July with construction possible in fall.
The Paisano encampment begins July 28 in Paisano Grove between Alpine and Marfa. Bloys camp meeting runs August 15 to 22 at Skillman Grove, a famed religious encampment in a live oak setting above sea level. Preachers include Dr Burma, Presbyterians. Dr Yearby, Baptists. Dr Anderson, Christians. Dr Arnodonk, Methodists. Attendees should bring bedding. no tents or cabins provided. Welcoming atmosphere with ample meals.
A Thursday afternoon blaze damaged the J. B. Heard residence and furnishings, with losses pegged in the thousands and adjusted for insurance. An adjuster also checked Monday’s Holder Magee fire damages nearby and noted the Beck household as fellow losers in the conflagration.
Theopolis Franklin Langham, 77, father of Joe Langham, died after a monthlong pneumonia battle. He succumbed at the home of Mrs. Kate Vaughan in Pecos, with Mrs. Aubrey Wolfe also noted among mourners. Langham had been in apparent good health until the illness began.
Dr Henry Van Valkenburgh will address Pecos at a union service Sunday evening at the First Methodist church. All local churches will suspend services for the event and the public is invited to attend.
Frank Haag of Midland a representative of the SSth district in the legislature died Thursday from injuries sustained in an automobile accident near Sterling City. Paul Vickers, Midland Chamber of Commerce secretary, was critically injured in the same wreck.
Fire Chief Charles F. Manahan cautions residents to avoid accumulating old rags especially those soaked in oil as current weather raises the danger of spontaneous combustion and fire.
The old Carthy hotel now the Central Hotel and a landmark on Ok street was moved on Thursday to a new location in the city hall Dhock.
About 200 Reeves county farmers from Madera Valley and Pecos river areas sign contracts to plow 1400 acres of cotton with cash rental and an option to buy government cotton at 6 cents per pound. If approved, roughly $20,000 will be paid to county farmers in August. Ward county follows with 1200 acres under the same program.
West Texas oil markets show optimism with crude prices rising and a possible return to dollar-a-barrel oil. Rumors place Sinclair Production Co drilling six offset wells in northern Loving County, with Joe Rush eyeing two more wells. In Ward County two productive wells were completed, W A Black No 1 Gordon yielding 200 barrels and Gulf No 18 Hutchins flowing 55 barrels from 2751 feet. Drilling results continue in Reeves, Loving and adjoining counties.

A baby girl arrived early Thursday at the Pecos Sanitarium to bless Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Schmidt. The child greeted Sheriff Louis Roberson with a playful tickle of his bald head. Mother and infant are reported in splendid health. The Enterprise extends sincere congratulations.
Highway Patrolman Dan Abbott formerly at Pecos now at Abilene broken leg in motorcycle spill. He is confined to a hospital in Abilene.
