EN BIGGS, owner of the Plaza Procer and other property, avoids bills by having the light company remove his meter and installing a motor driven plant. The setup runs a steady flow of power for the hotel and nearby tenants, drawing curiosity from others who may inspect the system.
The Enterprise editorials aim for balance on utility wrap issues. They note two sides and invite input from the public, utility workers, and news alumni within reasonable length and libel limits.
Wack May and Flake Young of Pecos Mercantile Co. are blamed for creating a boot craze in Pecos by distributing over 225 pairs of Friendly Five boots in two to three months and receiving a fresh shipment of 100 pairs. The store has seen boots sell fast as mail orders flood in from the trade area.
Harley Manahan served as chief watch inspector for the Pecos Valley Southern Railway Co. Charley accepted with one condition no PVSS pass. The pass arrived in 1938 after years, and now a local jeweler contemplates resigning the annual inspection of L. W. Anderson's ticker.
A downtown drug store sighting quotes L. W. proposing to cancel uncashed government bonds to free money for circulation. He calls those who hold securities unpatriotic, while describing his coffee moment as the setting.
Kerr and Louis Rob from Tilellam return from Austin Wednesday and declare that Ken Regan has become a prominent figure in the legislature. They say Regan has crafted trends and influence, becoming a key player among new lawmakers.
The Red Bluff Water Improvement Association now houses a Coolm wodions office suite in the Brandon Building. The office stores association records and serves as a reception room for business conducted by Vernon L. Sullivan, consulting engineer for the project.
H. Freels, a Chicago business man visiting to oversee oil properties, says the cold here exceeds Chicago’s current chill and comments that nothing compares to the severe spell up north.
The Texas and Pacific Railroad proposed soft mountain water to Pecos at 65 cents per thousand gallons delivered to city limits, or 10 cents per thousand at Toyah. The city would need to finance the pipeline and bear local distribution costs. Mayor Toliver noted consumer rates around 90 cents per thousand, versus 40 cents currently from Texas Louisiana Power. The council reviewed both options at a special meeting led by J. N. Lancaster's presentation and Holmes.
An agricultural school conducted with the Texas and Pacific Railway Co and A and M College extension service drew about 100 Pecos residents and visitors from the Pecos Garden club and garden groups. Ollie B Webb led the course with H V Davis arranging local details and Miss Sallie Ifill giving a home demonstration talk.
A mass meeting of more than 250 utility users in Pecos formed the Pecos Utility Users Association to seek rate relief. Dr J L Kincannon was elected president with Young Bell vice president and FE S Scrimshire secretary, while Dudley Yard Ben T Biggs J H Lawson and D D W Bozeman became directors. A committee was named to study fair adjustments and confer with utility representatives, with petitions placed at local drug stores for signatories.
Loyd Brownlee of Pecos Mercantile Co and Rex Wheatley of Joyce Pruit store Artesia, with Mrs Wheatley, faced a 32 below freeze while stranded near Tatum N M. Their car radiator froze and battery died at 1 30 am as they trudged five inches of snow to shelter. Wheatley suffered frostbite while Brownlee escaped unharmed.
The Pecos and Northwestern Telephone Company announces a two party telephone service for Pecos users. The plan saves residents about 6 dollars yearly and businesses about 12 dollars yearly. Monthly rates are 2.25 for residence and 4.00 for business. Sparks notes the company will grant the service on request with two connections on one line, independent signalling for each telephone.
A severe cold wave blanketed Pecos with a record low of 16 degrees below zero on Wednesday morning. Thermometers ranged from 6 to 16 below unofficially, with the Santa Fe Railway Co. station at 11 below. Cars stalled, pipes froze, schools closed, and fires burned through Tuesday night as residents endured the brutal weather and heavy snow.
Ethel King of Big Spring sold the Pecos Laundry to Clinton Ezell of Alpine. Ezell plans to continue Pecos bundle pickups by truck and keep a local office while aiming to reopen the Pecos air plant soon, with J A Miller joining Ezell in Alpine.
Dr. Monroe Slack, longtime Pecos leader and optometrist, returns to open a Pecos office in the First National Bank building space formerly used by Miss Lillie Poe. He will operate Saturdays for now and plans to spend more time in Pecos, after HQing in Marfa recently.
A Reeves and Ward counties bar association was organized with Henry Russell as president at Reeves county courthouse. Officers include L A Dale and Lee Bilberry as vice presidents and Roy I Bigs as secretary and treasurer. Committees will draft resolutions to oppose 10th district court elimination and by laws. reports due next Saturday.
Reeves county cattlemen borrowed 27506 dollars from the San Angelo branch of the Regional Agricultural Credit Corporation. Wikler county received 8000 dollars in loans. Crockett county led with 186 PSL borrowed, Pecos county followed with 125.96 dollars.
Reeves county basketball tournament set for Saturday at the local high school gym. Preliminary games start at 10:00 a.m. The final Round Robin round features Pecos Toyah and Balmorhea beginning at 7:50 p.m.
The Pecos Mercantile Co dry goods department uses the Scram idea in an advertisement attributed to Jack May. The promotion appears on page three.
Mrs Ethel King of Big Spring principal owner of the Pecos Laundry was here last Saturday on business. She conferred with J A Miller local manager of the laundry.
Gov Ferguson signed a bill extending the license payment deadline from February 1 to April 1 for 1933 auto licenses. Penalties and arrest risk are waived for those paying by the new date. Pecos reports about 65 in the late payment group and only about half of vehicles registered by February 1.
District Judge J A Crane told Reeves county grand jurors to vigorously prosecute liquor law violations while statutes remain in force. The panel includes A H Mills Sim Reeves Hubert Honaker Charles Daniels M W Collie Will Cowan George Dun can John Brocat Paul Dowling George Ross Lace Hart with Lopo named foreman. Petit jury reports next Monday.
The Texas Land Owners Association held a meeting in the district courtroom last Saturday. M. Caldwell of Abilene presided as vice president with Lee Satterwhite, former Texas House speaker, as chief speaker outlining the clouded title to minerals under about 8 million acres in West Texas and pending remedial legislation. Delegations came from 15 counties including Ward Pecos Presidio Jeff Davis Culberson Brewster Hudspeth Winkler Midland and others with Van Horn representatives led by County Judge Burch Carson and commissioners A. L. Hal and J. B. Foster.
Vernon L. Sullivan, engineer on the Red Bluff project, has been busy this week guiding contractors to the site. Many bidders have traveled from across the country to assess the location in preparation for bids. Bids are returnable Feb. 25.
The Orient dining room hosted Ollie B. Webb of the T P and the People for an agricultural short course. Webb noted the federal land bank in Houston had loaned millions to Texas farmers, with no foreclosures on diversifying growers learning modern methods and cooperation. Reppert performed sleight of hand for the club.
A formal February 25 opening by Ailes Motor Co in Pecos promises five prizes led by a $10 gold first prize. The firm, in the Van Horn building on the highway, already offers Texaco gasoline oils and service and runs a storage and repair garage. The remodeled building is one of Pecos’s largest garages and the owners Ashton and L W Ailes are new but progressive Pecos residents.
Christian church members from Barstow Wink Toyah Monahans Pecos will unite for a Sunday morning service at Pecos Christian church with Monahans as special guests. A baptism follows, then a basket lunch on the parsonage lawn if weather allows, otherwise at the church. Rev. Gus Ramage will attend Pecos after leading a revival in Monahans.
Old timers in Pecos recall the coldest spell with C. O. Finley noting 17 years here and calling it the coldest weather he remembers. T. Y. Casey with 35 years in town says the thermometer never dropped below zero before. T. H. Beauchamp of The First National recalls mercury hitting 2 below about 25 years ago.
