Mayor B. A. Toliver spoke on Pecos city operations noting debt decline and rising valuations. The World Fellowship Meet for Christian Youths in Southwest Texas begins with an East Indian banquet at First Christian Church Pecos at 6 30 PM under host Rev Oliver Harrison. Delegates from San Angelo Big Spring Midland Sweetwater Monahans Odessa Colorado Pecos and others attend with talks on world missions and historic conferences in Edinburgh 1910 Jerusalem 1928 and Madras 1938.
Work has begun on three Reeves county ranches under the 1939 range program with tanks and spreader dams being built. Similar efforts on other holdings nationwide are expected to start soon. Grover C. H Lott 64 father of Vestel Lott editor of The Pecos Enterprise died in Shreveport Louisiana from heart trouble. Funeral services planned in Clarendon likely Saturday. Survived by four other children Warren Harold Marjorie all of Shreveport and Billy UT student. Burial in Clarendon family plot.
Mr and Mrs T J McMahan announce the birth of a six pound one quarter ounce boy in a local hospital on Wednesday morning.
Reeves County poll taxes for 1939 hover near 1000 with 967 issued by the sheriff and more in the mail. Precinct totals show Pecos 672, Toyah 115, Balmorhea 151, Saragosa 27, Orla 11, with overall receipts well below last year’s 1800 peak but still strong for an off election year.
Pecos residents learned of the accidental death of J G Cleveland a Longview former carpenter. He suffered fatal injuries after a fall while installing an air conditioner. His daughter Flora Lea Cleveland was formerly Pecos band sweetheart.
The judges ruled a tie in the square dance contest between Pecos and Kermit at the Presidents Birthday Ball in Kermit Monday night. The Pecos set included Sheriff and Mrs. Louis Roberson and other couples led by Mr. and Mrs. Bob Coffey. Their opponents featured Uncle Bill Anderson and Don Miller among others and their wives.
Howard King Bill Higgins and Arlen Bowie received suspended sentences of three years each after pleading guilty to burglary in district court Saturday. Judge J A Crane suspended the terms on recommendations from Sheriff Louis Roberson and District Attorney Bill Kerr.
Voters in Pecos Saragosa Patrole and Orla last weekend backed a maintenance tax up to one dollar per hundred value for the district schools. The tally showed Pecos 67 to 8 for vs against 8. Patrole 1 for 1 against. Orla 1 for 4 against. Saragosa 23 for 1 against. The governing board meets in April to organize the new district and set the tax rate.
C K McKnight 79 longtime Pecos resident died Sunday at his home. Funeral service at Methodist Church Monday conducted by Rev A C Douglas with pallbearers Hollis Smith Albert Sisk Dale Sadbury R Henry Blackwell Monroe Kerr George Ross. Survived by wife, no other relatives. Interment Fairview Cemetery.
The Pecos School Board formally accepted the resignation of Coach Jim Neill as head athletic coach and high school history teacher effective June 1. Applications for both teaching and coaching positions are already being received.
February 24 field day will showcase AAA program range practices with officials from College Station county agents and Reeves County committeemen. L. Smith will lead the day, with demonstrations of spreader dams earthen tanks and terracing and measurements of completed structures. The event is part of a West Texas series conducted by district agent J D Prewit.
Robert Emmett Booker Jr., 22, died Sunday at his father’s home after a long illness. Born in Belt on March 25, 1916, he grew up in Pecos, graduated from the Pecos school system, and was a Presbyterian. Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church in Pecos with burial in Belton. Surviving are his father RK E Booker, one brother John, his step-mother, several aunts and relatives in Texas and Arkansas.
County Agent Ted Johnston told tentative new farmers in Reeves county that February 15 is the final date to file an acreage allotment application for 1939. After this date no applications will be accepted and no participation in the government agricultural program that year will be possible. Johnston noted several new farms in Red Bluff districts had not filed any applications.
J R Wills, elected mayor of Grandfalls to succeed the late J D Eugle, is a brother of Pecos businessman Jack Wills. Though not a candidate, his name was written in by supporters. He operates a drug business in Grandfalls.
Callahan's El Paso firm bids 28 723 to win the contract for over fifty miles of power lines in the Red Bluff Water Power Control District. Reynolds Electric 31 686 and C F Lytle 34 540 63 followed. Final approval pending at Fort Worth PWA, with equipment bids rejected and Zimmer Motor low for a lineman's truck at 1715.
Red Bluff Water Power Control District directors set season recreation permits at 15 dollars with a pre season sale offering 13 50 for annual permits bought before February 24 1939. Permits cover March 1 1939 to February 28 1940. Existing tickets remain valid until April 1 with 85 cent allowance on early purchase. Funds from the sale support reservoir improvements amid prior use for expenses to protect property from trespass.
Robert Adams of Ada Oklahoma died Tuesday from pneumonia. He was the brother of Mrs. Jimmy Morrison of Pecos. Mr and Mrs Morrison left Sunday for Ada after learning of his illness. Funeral services were held Wednesday.
