Askew to keynote 1971 Democratic convention in Miami
Gov. Reubin Askew of Florida will deliver the keynote at the 1971 Democratic National Convention in Miami Beach opening July 9. Announced in Washington by DNC Chairman Lawrence F. O'Brien, the Pensacola attorney had emerged as a dark horse candidate for governor after defeating incumbent Claude Kirk in 1970 on tax reform. Roy Wilkins urged Ohio union leaders to push blacks into higher paying blue collar jobs and sought broader civil rights gains for African Americans at the AFL-CIO conference.

Debt ceiling ritual persists as Congress sets increase
The long standing practice of raising the national debt limit continues as Congress is expected to approve a 50 billion dollar rise to 480 billion. Analysts note the debt ceiling exists more for tradition and political leverage than fiscal restraint, with the decision mostly made before formal votes. Weather: southwest Texas remains partly cloudy and warmer today then cools Wednesday with highs 54 to 68 and lows 28 to 42.
