First Baptist Church is preparing a Christmas food basket for the family. Others wishing to help may contribute to the Salvador Hinojas Fund started at First National and Security State banks. Funds received will be used to defray medical expenses.
Dense fog cloaked eastern and coastal Texas while unseasonably warm conditions persisted. Temperatures ranged from 26 in Marfa to 81 in Brownsville with low mornings in the 20s and highs near 70s, and most areas expected to stay partly cloudy through the week.
State employes will have Christmas closure Friday through Tuesday as offic es close then remain closed. County courthouse offices close Monday and Tuesday. City and federal offices banks and most businesses close Monday. Schools dismiss Thursday at 2 30 p.m. with return set for Wednesday Jan 3. Law enforcement operate constantly with patrols focusing on speeders and drunk drivers.
Fire at Ramon Ybarra residence 1320 Veterans Blvd Tuesday night started by an unvented heater. Firefighters were called at 4 48 p m and reported the blaze out by 11 16 p m. Damage concentrated in the ceiling of the flat roof house per Fire Chief J T Prewit.
A young man at Kennedy Airport shot a sky marshal and a customs agent after grabbing a gun during a search following an X ray finding a questionable object in his attache case. The suspect was captured on the tarmac. the injured officers were treated at Peninsula General Hospital.

Apollo 17 astronauts Eugene Cernan Ronald Evans and Harrison Schmitt return to Earth aboard the USS Ticonderoga four days before Christmas after a 13 day lunar voyage. They land in the Pacific near Samoa and head to Ellington Air Force Base as officials hail the mission as flawless and historic.
Cotton receipts for the week ending December 15 fell from 7326 to 4619 bales with the season total at 56 850. Strict Low Middling remained dominant at 36 percent of classings and all white grades at 60 percent. Fiber strength averaged 76 000 psi. material from Pecos County shows 900 1000 on loan for better qualities. American Pima samples totaled 928 bales bringing season total to 7175 with Grade 5 leading at 40 percent.

Overnight parking expands at TraPark near Pecos airport with five new spaces for camper trailers. The modern trailer park features two showers three lavatories and other amenities including washing machines dryers crushed ice cold drinks and TV. Charlene Evans notes high praise from tourists and drivers from New York Michigan and Mexico City. TraPark now offers 96 total spaces.
