Patchy fog and lingering drizzle kept Texas near freezing with highs around 33 degrees. Pecos recorded a 33 degree overnight low after a mild 70-degree Monday, while forecasters warned of possible snow flurries mixing with rain.
Carl Newberry 26, a North Carolina native, takes over Pecos Cable Vision at 700 S. Cedar St. He expects FCC approval for two new channels and will move with his wife Peggy and two daughters Christy and Sandy Lee. District Manager Hagene notes Newberry’s potential to do a good job. The pair spent Monday touring Pecos. Newberry praises the town. Weather and storm updates accompany regional notes.
Former President Harry S. Truman remains in very serious condition at Research Hospital though a spokesman said he seemed more alert after a restful night. Kidney output rose to 490 cubic centimeters in 24 hours, a favorable sign but still inadequate. doctors warn kidneys function below 10 percent.
The Pecos Eagle Choir will perform Christmas selections for the Lions Club noon meeting Wednesday and the Rotary Club Thursday and later appear at the Country Club. A Christmas program is set for 2 p.m. Thursday at the high school auditorium as schools dismiss at 2 30 for holidays and resume January 3.
Pecos Volunteer Firemen answered an early morning call to Lincoln Street where a small storage room was burning. Fire Chief J T Prewit said the building was already burned to the ground when they arrived and reported the fire out at 2 06 a.m.
Carlsbad Caverns National Park will implement a new fee system January 1 per Park Superintendent Donald Dayton. The old per person $1.50 entrance to the cavern and separate guide and elevator fees will be replaced by a single park entrance fee.
Jack Wayne Frazier a 19 year old from Kermit is jailed in Pecos on a charge of leaving the scene of an accident reported December 10. Marguerite Hawkins Hughes of Houston told police she was driving west on West Third Street when a passing vehicle struck her pickup and fled. Patrol Sgt Charles Smith traced the car by its license plate and arrested Frazier. The report also notes traffic fee changes and future passport details unrelated to the arrest. Pope Paul VI created the archdiocese of Oklahoma City and named John R Quinn its first archbishop, after which Tulsa becomes a diocese covering 31 eastern Oklahoma counties. The Tulsa diocese has about 51,000 Catholics in a 1,103,000 population.
Principal Frank Kelley announced in the Enterprise that Pecos High School gym bleachers in the center section will be reserved for visiting fans with a visitors sign. Local residents are asked to avoid that section to keep out-of-town guests together for comfort.

U.S. planes launched the war’s heaviest single raid on the Hanoi Haiphong area. The U.S. Command reports two B52s and an F111 lost with eight airmen missing, seven rescued. Hanoi claims civilian casualties and several aircraft shot down. North Vietnam vows to resist U.S. terms. More raids and aircraft movements suggest a large, continuing campaign.
The Chamber of Commerce will elect five directors from 15 nominees for three year terms with installation at the March banquet and office start April 1. Ballots mailed to members specify five votes or write ins. terms expire for several incumbents and appointees are listed.
