Tony Douglas current hit Thank You For Touching My Life topped WBAP Fort Worth charts for three weeks. The song was written by a local composer, whose name appears alongside the rising single.
A federal hearing examiner recommended gas rate increases of 18 to 111 percent for Texas and New Mexico’s Permian Basin. Rates would take effect within 40 days unless parties or the FPC intervene, pending final order by the Federal Power Commission.
Winners in Pecos decorating contest were named by the Young Homemakers Club and Pecos Chamber of Commerce women’s division. First and second place in Novelty and Religious classes went to residents of Carlsbad and Pecos, with several businesses receiving honors in the Business class. Cash prizes funded by local businesses accompanied the awards.
A mixed weather picture and health report fill the day. Forecasts predict clear to partly cloudy skies through Christmas, with a cooling trend. Apollo 17 commander Eugene Cernan Harrison Schmitt and Ronald Evans landed at Ellington Air Force Base near the Manned Spacecraft Center after a moon mission in which they collected moon rocks from Taurus Littrow. Pecos merchants warned after counterfeit $20 notes were found in town on Wednesday. The Pecos Police Department activated its warning system to alert merchants that someone is attempting to pass counterfeit currency during the Christmas season.
Cotton Inc showcased an $8,000 Jolly Green Giant compacting press in Pecos Valley, turning six to seven bales into a secure cube on the turnrow. The system speeds ginning, cuts trailer needs, and enables year round storage, with co‑ops and custom harvesters possible for wider adoption.
Graveside services for William J. Ross, 74, a Pecos pioneer now of Carlsbad New Mexico, will be held at Fairview Cemetery at 2 p.m. Friday with Rev. Tom Strother and the American Legion officiating. He died after a short illness on Wednesday. Born 1898 in Pearlsburg Virginia, he moved to Pecos in 1903 and later attended West Point for a year and served in WWI with the 36th Division. He lived in Carlsbad 23 years before returning to Pecos in 1970. Survivors include four brothers Bert F. of Palm Springs California Adam L. of Jackson Mississippi Harry F. of Phoenix Arizona and Larry W. of Pecos. three sisters Jane Ross of Pecos Mrs Byron Lackey of Pecos and Mrs Harry W. Hinkle of Alexandria Virginia.
A kitchen fire at Pecos Valley Country Club started in the gas-charcoal steak broiler. Fire crews from Pecos Volunteer Fire Department arrived at 6:54 p.m. and confined the blaze to the kitchen ceiling, with extensive damage overall. The fire was extinguished by 7:14 p.m. Chief J.T. Prewit reported.
